It appears that I am unable to select individual seats for my wife and I (+ lap infant) in Economy on the 21/12/22 BKK - SYD flight. I can only choose a preference between Window and Aisle.

I am Platinum and wife is Gold.

To get back to Aus (from LHR) at Christmas without losing an arm and a leg I booked a Lufthansa RTW with a number of Qantas Connections to get the QF minimum flight count up.

The flights are all stating eligible for SC and points but for some reason just cannot select seats on this flight.

Thoughts?

I assume the trip appears in QF MMB? If it’s there it ought to allow seat selection. Otherwise, yes probably best to call.

It’s not particularly full at the moment, so that’s not the issue.

Is this the only QF sector? Perhaps your QFF number isn’t in the system correctly (being an LH RTW booking) so not giving you free seat selection.

Try Manage Booking on rj.com
Great idea and cant believe i didnt think of that. However whilst it showed the seat map and allowed selection it did not go through. On the same train of thought I also tried Finnair and Malaysian with no success.

Since you are WP you could also just ring QF and get seats sorted without having to wait too long on the phone.

I will try that now. Hopefully the wait isnt long.

Booking shows up no problem and managed to select seats for the domestic legs.

Thanks for the responses.

Something else that might be worth a shot that's worked for me in the past to select "unselectable" seats:
1. Go to Manage My Booking on Cathay Pacific
2. Select a seat preference (Window/Aisle) for yourself and your wife - if it works as it has for me in the past you will then get assigned 2 random seats that are not even in the same row!
3. Go to rj.com and change the random seats to seats of your choice.

I have a return awards flight for 2 in J SYD-SIN in November. So when I booked these flights I was able to select seats for both legs.
But now I can only change my seat selections for the flights SYD-SIN but cannot change seats for the return flight. It only gives me the option to select window/aisle. I have never experienced this before, so I thought that maybe there is some error glitch? I am only bronze.

Didn't want to really call yet, as I am waiting for a refund of paid exit row seat selections for a flight from Auckland when there was a plane change. And they won't let me select new seats as the seat selection has an error. The new flight does not have those seats or rows on it.

Same issue for me this morning on a return award flight in October - can change the seat selection for the flight to LAX but not the return leg. I'm assuming it is a system glitch?

Just from experience to the OP, but maybe helping others. My parents own a house in Thailand and have been using Thailand as a stopover between HKG and Australia through the end of COVID. I have frequently had issues with QF23/24 where they can only select a preference, only to later be able to choose seats again, and then go back to preferences. It switches states quite regularly, so if you weren't able to get through to the call centre or they weren't able to help, simply wait and try again a week or so later. While YMMV it worked for me.

Flights are pretty full and you might be only able to see a the seats available to Bronze/non-status PAX. Even though there could be a lot of seats free be currently reserved for Silver, Gold and up.

I was surprised to learn on a similar thread that it is quite restrictive for lower tiers.

Everything still available will open up at T-80.

Good thought - this would make sense although I am Silver - so perhaps restricted unless Gold or higher. I'll check again in a few days just in case it randomly resolves :)

It becomes a bit more of an issue with 2 or more on the booking ie there needs to be 2 or more spare seats before it even gives you the seat map.

RJ.com might show you what’s free but probably any attempt to move won’t stick.

A free EF account (ExpertFlyer) is useful for checking seat availability.
