QF30 Emergency Landing in MNL after door "Popped"

I get the ARM doors bit but what is the 'cross check'?

Is it that the FA who Arms the door must get someone else to Check that its Armed?

Correct,

Once you had armed your door, you then went to opposite door to check that the crew member had correctly armed it as well. But as mentioned cross checking was dropped sometime ago by Qantas.

Singapore Airlines say "Set doors to Automatic" but it is the same as arming a door.

The 737/767 over wing exits and the 767RR doors 3 are always armed. If you open them on the ground, the slides will inflate.

pprune reporting VH-OJK as the airfraft in question.
Early 90's aircraft, not the oldest 744 by a long shot

More from the ABC. It appears that a chunk of the aircraft is missing:
Speaking from the Manila airport, passenger Dr June Kane says she heard a loud bang from underneath the plane, and saw debris fly through the cabin. "I'm looking at the plane now and on the left hand side, just forward of the wing, there's a gaping hole from the wing to the underbody," she said.
"It's about two metres by four metres and there's baggage hanging out so you assume that there's a few bags that may have gone missing."

OK.

I see bags....

Bags are usually inside rolling cargo containers.

how did they get out, I note that some of those containers are pretty flimsy with a vinyl side curtain but also have seen them in bomb tests designed to contain an explosion.

anyway good thing it was'nt on the usa run as at 10000 feet the fuel burn can be an issue to avoid landing on an aqua tarmac!

Qantas damage control will be interesting.

There have been quite a few instances of doors opening inflight at altitude in a 747: AI 182, PA 103, UAL 811, and TWA 800 for instance.
Sorry, but NOT TW800. The official NTSB finding is that there was an explosion in one of the fuel tanks, but there are other theories (certainly nothing to do with doors opening).

And I think AI182 and PA103 are in a similar category, eg explosive devices. I guess you were just trying to be funny (and succeeded)...

Lets take TW800 off the list then rather than drag the thread off topic

You might however want to take a look at this http://www.ntsb.org/Wiringcargodoorlite/home_files/AllGovcombined.pdf after after looking at the photo just published of the damage to QF30, its early days yet and pure speculation but cargo doors could get some more attention as a result and there is some interesting historical data contained within that reference! Food for thought, then again I could be way off track as well. As far as I can see there is no door in the area of the damage from the new photo so who knows.

Well, from what l got told he said that even if the main doors were unlocked, it would be highly unlikely the door would open because of the pressure difference.

The doors have no locking ability at all. You could open it immediately after take off and a few moments afterwards. On the 747 it is even possible to open doors 3 mid-flight at a certain altitude, with the assistance of straps located in a compartment just above each door.

serfty should be able to clarify that one for us. ;)

According to a post by NM over at FT, The Pope's plane was VH-OEE and came back to Australia via SIN
FlyerTalk Forums - View Single Post - Flying the Pope home So if everything is correct, it was NOT the plane that took the Pope home.

Looking at the pic, is there actually a door there? I am not sure I recall one in that area
I can't recall one there either. Various articles are saying door popped etc, others just say hole in the fuselage. I tend to believe it's the 2nd.

If only it was 2 days later, this would have appeared in QF009's trip report!

VH-OJK is the bird involved, the same one that had corrosion discovered in Feb apparently, it was the first refit bird and it was during the refit that the issue was discovered.
