QF6 Can't Select Seat in PE

I am booked in PE on QF6 later this month but cannot choose a seat, can only advise whether I prefer an aisle or window seat. The aircraft is listed as a 744. I phoned QF but they didn't really give me a straight answer as to why, just that it's Airport Check-in Only. Does anyone know why? Are they likely to change the aircraft?

The downgrade is happening from October but maybe they are planning to do it earlier.

They often don't allow you to select a seat if a high percentage of seats have already been allocated.
