Good evening all, this is my first post and hopefully someone can help.
I am flying on QF63 in late November in business. I have noticed that Qantas use the old 4 class and the reconfigured 3 class planes. I have been looking on The Qantas Source to see what registration numbers are used on different days.(totally random from what I can see). How accurate is the information on The Qantas Source and is there somewhere else I can get this information?
Thank You for your help
Ian

I don't know anything about The Qantas Source so cannot comment on it.
I use Expert Flyer to look at the seat maps and and have had no problems with it - aircraft can be substituted right up to the last minute so there is never any guarantee until the flight depart.

If you post a flight number and date in the thread below someone will check and confirm the current config for that flight

If you have an iPhone, get MyFlights app, and it will notify you if there is an aircraft swap or if your seat allocation changes.

Hi Ian,

The Qantas Source is reliable for historical information, but cannot be used to predict the future with certainty. There is no predictable pattern of certain aircraft being used on certain days.

Out of the 11 Qantas 747s left in the fleet, only two have old first class seats. However they do tend to fly to Johannesburg (and Tokyo) more regularly than other destinations. So the chance of getting either configuration is roughly 50%.

If you let us know which dates you're looking at (either here or on the thread that Steady linked to), someone will be able to tell you which style of aircraft is currently scheduled to operate on a particular day.

By the way, I think QF63 is a great flight. Make sure you get an "A" window seat as there'll be a good chance of seeing Antarctica mid-flight.

Will that MyFlights app class a config change from one 744 to another 744 as an actual 'aircraft type change'?

Thanks for the replies. When I booked it showed a 3 class plane and I have a window seat upstairs.I was checking on Qantas Source to see what plane is used on a Tuesday which is when I fly.Over the last month or 2 the majority have been the reconfigured planes, but as you say, Mattg my chances are 50/50.
I have done the trip to JNB twice with SAA and twice with Singapore so I figured it was time to give Qantas a go.
Once again thanks for the replies,

Worst J flight of my life. Got the only old 3 class unrefurbished aircraft left in the fleet, no IFE for the whole trip, fairly disinterested cabin crew then over an hour for our bags to arrive on the carousel (almost everyone else had collected and gone) so that we almost missed our connecting flight to CPT

First flight of a 280K RTW and subsequent flights with QR, BA, LAN,and also QF8 home were excellent. Damage done though, Mrs Nick is more than happy to never fly QF long-haul again

my husband just flew qf63 Saturday 1st August and returns on qf 64 Tuesday 25th August. Not sure which plane he was on, but he got a points upgrade from PE to J, got 14b exit row seat upstairs. He was very happy with every aspect of his trip, spoiled him forever I think, but this was a first business flight!!! Hope you are happy with your flights.

Hi Ian,
You are already familiar with the different possible configurations on QF63 but maybe you haven't found out about the best seats.
FWIW I flew QF63 in April (in reconfigured guise) and got advice on here beforehand that Row 1 was best because the window there was angled toward the front giving a better view. From experience I can tell you that the only way you would get a better view from 1A would be if you smashed the window and stuck your head out!
There are only 3 rows in the small 12 seat J cabin up front which makes it great - quieter and less risk of crying babies etc- but Row 2 is definitely best and then Row 3 - Row one isn't as good because there is less legroom and the tapering of the cabin means you are closer to the people in the other R1 seats.

Adjacent to rows 2 & 3 there is a central triangular "ottoman" type bit (I'm sure there's a more correct word for it) which makes the cabin much more spacious feeling around those seats - so I would recommend the left window seats in Rows 2 or 3. If the flight flies far enough south you'll get views of icebergs.

Your husband would have been on VH-OEI which is a refurb.

Thanks All, Lots of information to look into. Will check out the front section of the plane. Hopefully between the flight to and back from JNB (QF63 and QF64) I will get one of the reconfigured planes.

We are flying SYD - JNB on 27 August in J. Originally seat selection was for a refurb but when I checked at the weekend our seat choices had changed with +1 and I not together. The seat layout is now a non-refurb. Put in an alert on EF in case plane changes again. Managed to seat us together again.

Good afternoon all,

I am travelling Qantas ‘QF63’ on Monday 16[SUP]th[/SUP] November 2015.

Any know what plane type this is? What are the differences between the plane types? Where is the best place to sit?

Thanks,

Thomas

The aircraft is a B747-400.
It has the old layout with first class seats (rows 1-4) even though no first class fares are sold.
Rows 11-18 are business seats on the upper deck.
Everything else is on the lower deck.
You haven't said what class you are flying, so I have simply attached photos of the seat maps.
You could look it up on seat guru if you need more information.
Just be aware that more seats may be blocked for you depending on your status.
Expert Flyer uses my Platinum status when it queries QF.
If you have any specific questions just ask.

Which cabin class, and how many people are travelling?

Hi esseeeayeenn,

Thanks for the response, I am travelling with another person (two people in total) in Economy.

I am just a bronze member and the other traveler with me is a silver member.

Thanks for your help,

Thomas

I would always choose a window seat on the left hand side of the plane for QF63 as the views of the Antarctic ice sheets are great (presuming the weather is favourable). And as there are two of you travelling, one of the blocks of two by the windows at the back of the plane are ideal.

With that in mind, I suggest picking 73A and 73B as the last remaining seat pair to match this criteria.

By the way, it looks like you have an older 747 operating your flight (not that this really makes a difference to my seating recommendation).

Thanks Matt, is there any difference between the older 747 and the new 747? (apart from the older cabin?) If so what are they?
