QF9 cancelled, when will they rebook me?

Ok, two bad developments have happened since yesterday:
1: They rerouted me to Sydney via the first MEL-SYD flight, so I am stuck in Sydney for 10 hours before the QF1 flight, is it on a take-it-or-leave it basis? Can agents change me to a later MEL-SYD flight or only if they are nice?
2: I noticed QF has stopped selling the QF1 flight on 14/11 also, does anyone have expert flyer and can confirm whether that's true? I have a feeling even if I accept the change, they will cancel the QF1 flight and I would be back to square one.

You should be able to reduce the connection time with a simple phone call.

I noticed QF has stopped selling the QF1 flight on 14/11
It could be sales have temporarily been paused to allow for rebooking pax from the MEL flights, perhaps they're close to capacity.

Agree on both counts.

Of course the wait time on the call through to QF atm will be almost as long as your layover :(

The seatmap on EF for that flight tends to agree with this - the flight was probably fairly close to capacity to begin with. I notice though that they have opened up some W inventory, but none in J or Y.

Thanks everyone. I won't be able to spend hours on call today, I have sent off a message to the QFF rewards team via Facebook and website asking to reduce the connection time, hopefully I will get a reply. Last time when I had to update my mobile number to the UK one they got back to me within a day, fingers crossed.

Edit: post-covid, can you still check your bags the whole way if you have a domestic connection? Do I need to pick up the bags at domestic and check-in again at SYD? That would determine how much connection time I need at SYD.

Confirm domestic connection is still available in SYD, as long as meet the minimum connection time published

FWIW Now QF have canxd the start of the direct MEL service; delayed it to 27/11. Basically so they can pack SYD bound aircraft, I don’t think the SYD bound flight connects in time in DRW for any MEL departures from there. Hence maybe the need perhaps to go continue via SYD and probably overnight.

EK may have a QF codeshare with more J class reward inventory as an option? Considering QF have canxd your initial flight, that may be an option you could request QF could argue for?

Wish you luck. Unfortunately the service from QF sucks at the moment…

Nothing to do with 'packing' the SYD flight, ultimately only 10-30 people were booked on the flights. Quite pointless operating it.
QF will put them on the flight via SYD.

QF will put them on the flight via SYD.for other airlines to carry 30 passengers into all Australian ports during the whole pandemic but not the national airline…
Must be difficult for QF to quickly set up and operate a reliable schedule to the 2 biggest cities in Australia. Clearly 1 weeks notice wasn’t enough to fill every flight.

Not really... the showed they can do it. They just didn't like the outcome!
Wonder if those 35,000+ reported Australians stranded overseas are choosing more reliable airlines to fly back; those that kept flying to oz throughout the pandemic such as QR, SQ, MH etc etc?

Shame the QF connection to MEL via DRW isn’t better timed. But then, I guess, people that travel with QF a lot are used to everything being routed via SYD.

That's the thing isn't it? I am beginning to wonder whether the 'urgency' in being 'stranded' and desperately needing to come home was simply because they couldn't? Now that they can, there's no hurry? SQ is selling coach fares from LHR to Oz one way for AUD1200. So it's not like money should be a major factor anymore.

There are more countries than just the UK...

Looks like QF9 has been retimed to depart MEL at 18:45 instead of 19:40

Yes. Funny how ‘check my trip’ is able to notify you hours before the airline actually running the service. Don’t think this is purely a QF thing as it’s happened to me with others.

I booked a J award ticket from MEL-DRW-LHR in early November. Given Qantas announced they will push back this flight to late November, when can I expect them to rebook me on the SYD service?

Will they always put me on the flight closest to my original departure date? I really need to be in LHR on a certain date.
I wouldn’t let Qantas sort it out. They can be an absolute nightmare.
