Thanks for that. Good point re the cleaning and turn around time involved.

Just had confirmed from Qantas that the transit time is 2 hours and 5 mins so there should be plenty of time assuming its all on schedule. I may ask if there are any express pass options at checkin?

mattj, from observation the quickest that these A388s seem to manage a stop in DXB for is about 75 minutes.

There is also freight to unload and possibly load.

As with all of us - even those in row 1A - you won't have a 'net' time of 75 minutes if that is the extent of the stop as it will take you a few minutes to get off the plane and similarly when you reboard. However in your favour is that the stop can often be 90 to 120 minutes or more - it varies from day to day. There is no set pattern.

I seem to remember a few years ago it took about 15 minutes to clear security there, didn't help that everyone had to take their shoes off. Seems to always slow things down.

Any hints on getting off the plane and into the showers at the lounge in DXB quickly? Does everyone get shuffled through the same security, or is there a quieter one down the hallway or something?

You're already airside. You don't go through the x-ray machines again, so you don't have to take shoes off.

That wasn't my experience. During our transit in DXB we disembark, then get shuffled through security again and all bags, laptops etc through the X-rays and all belts shoes etc off before taking the escalator back up to the duty free area and the lounges

It's the same checkpoint. It depends what cabin you're in and how fast you can walk. (There has been times when I've gotten off a widebody flight around the middle and beaten those who got off first to immigration or connection security)
Are you on QF9 thru to LHR?

jb, I have been through Dubai on transit a few times, and, well us passengers anyway, always have to go though a carry-on baggage x-ray security area to get to the gate lounges and transit area. Because I live in Brisbane, I use EK from Brisbane, there were several aircraft all landed at the same time, and because hundreds of us, it took almost 40 minutes to get though this double security station, complete with 'security doorway' from the aircraft to the gates and lounges ...absolute chaos. I recall seeing several pax waving boarding passes for connections and being allowed though. On other occasions, when lucky, few aircraft had disembarked its pax, at the same time, travel though this security checkpoint can be quicker.

Seems a very weird, because as you say, we are 'airside', and should not be possible to get anything considered harmful??

If you are not transiting, then you just exit as usual and find your baggage etc

You guys transit there much more than I do, so I'll have to stand corrected. For the life of me though, I can't remember anything other than a fairly low key affair near one of the lounges, so I guess whatever was there didn't make much of an impression.

When I last went through DXB they x-rayed my carry-on and said "do you have one of those luggage weighers in your bag", to which I readily agreed. They required that it be taken out and then they took the small included tape measure (metal) that I had never really noticed, pulled it out out and with practiced ease snapped it off. I was then able to proceed through. Did I say that the security person was female - she had obviously performed this procedure many times.

I found the check at DXB very similar in intensity too HKG, although without the temperature scanners.

Maybe Dubai do not trust other airports carry on baggage check and re-do it before you carry onto one of the their gates. Fortunately, I have had plenty of time for my connections and although a further delay, in the interests of safety, one of those travel experiences.

Dubai has a very big terminal system, with kilometres of walkways winding their way through shopping. Shuttles and travelators help. If you have to get from one end to the other, then allow 30+ minutes walking. So, with added security and the inevitable flight delays, early boarding times and gate closures, connections less that 1-2 hours are very risky.

Sounds like leave the plane ASAP and follow the signs then! We're in F which should help.

I didn't know metal tape measures were prohibited? Well I never thought to carry one I have to admit. I used to carry a plastic-y one.

Basically through transit security then up the nearest lift bank to the lounges which are a floor onto themselves.

Quick look at the map to identify nearest shower - and go get a buzzer (can be a wait at times). Then find the sit down restaurants, then explore

Sounds like a plan. Though if it's living up to its' usual late standards it may be a flying visit anyway

I have been though Dubai in both F and J. The new Terminal 3 F lounge is superb. Its huge. So few pax in there, you feel like it is empty. Because many more pax are J, the new Terminal 3 J lounge is quite busy. When I flew back in from Paris, I deliberately got a flight with a 10 hour lay over at the F lounge. We landed at 12:00 midnight and supposed to depart at 10:00am. Found the lounge, had a shower, got in my PJ, went to one of the quiet lounges(rooms that are darkened with day beds) had a great sleep, had a shower, breakfast, only to find the aircraft had a mechanical issue(the usual fuel pumps which A380 seem to have issues with) and we left 3 hours late...which gave us plenty of time for exploring the lounges.
