It's an interesting flight because other departure ports think it's a domestic connection and everyone was sold duty free and technically shouldn't have been as it should be confiscated on transit if its not packed correctly.

So just for final confirmation- had you been not delayed, you COULD have bought Duty Free in Melbourne (or in Perth on arrival), could you have? So no one in the Duty Free shop questions that because technically, you are in "international waters" during this time

That place is in its own little universe. When we flew PER-SIN last year, we had to check in and transit thru security on the domestic side, then up to the lounge until our flight was called. We had to pass thru security again, and as I have replacement knees, went thru the usual routine of divesting myself of anything and everything before proceeding thru the barrier. No bells rang, and I asked the operator who was standing around not too interested, why this was so, and he replied that the machine was not activated for the moment. As I was putting my life back together, I pondered why hadn't he told me that before I went thru the whole embuggerance unnecessarily.

Did the flight the other week from NZ and had a 12 minute seat to seat connection as we were late and we were told not to go and buy duty free and make our way to the AC as it had been held for us so I missed out but at least 10 people that we were running with had bags of duty free.

They let them all through with it after they checked seals etc, but I asked the screener while I was waiting for the body scanner and he said provided its in a clear sealed bag that it was purchased with its okay to transit. None of the AKL bags were clear and sealed so that's where the issue was. 1 guy did have it and he was connecting to LHR from AKL so they must offer the service in AKL.

When buying DF in AKL (fixed the dumb error ) the past few times, when they scan the BP, I've been asked if I'm transiting in SYD to another international flight. Although I haven't been, the shop assistant said that if so, they pack the booze in see-though sealed bags. I'm assuming that this would have been fine.
