I am considering booking an award using QFF pts, SJD-LAX on AA. The a/c is a 737-800. The AA website shows First & Main cabin. SeatGuru shows First, Main Cabin Extra and Economy. The Qantas website offers Economy and Business with First showing "No Seats".

Which seat do I get booking 'Business' on the Qantas site?

I'm guessing you would get the forward cabin, i.e. "First Class".

If I go to the AA website, when I try and purchase a seat on the same flight sector for cash, it gives me the option to purchase "Business / First" fares. Selecting a Business fare (class D) on a 738 shows me I can select a seat in what is normally dubbed the "First Class".

I'm guessing this may have to do with cross-border trips, where F/J/Y flights or J/Y flights are normal, rather than F/Y on domestic.

Search AA website for exact flight - should've thought of that.

Thanks.

[edit]

To be clear, the following is in relation to two class USA domestic flights on AA and as such not relevant to the OP's single segment SJD-LAX question.

[-]Actually, no![/-]

You need to pay the toll for a first class award routing to access the pointy end of two class AA domestic flights.

There are no business class award fare buckets on those.

Domestically you will only find business class awards in the 3 class flights.

I'm confused. I've done the 3 class on the 777. I booked business and got business. The only options on the QF site are economy and business for this flight.

Pay the toll?

Isn't this a flight from Mexico to the USA and therefore sold as Coach and Business?
The OP can book this flight as a QF partner award in J IIRC?

This is a USA/Mexico flight, not quite domestic.

If you look up LAX/DFW, for example, you can only get Y and F on the booking engine.

With this booking to Mexico, consistent with the AA website, J options appear (at J prices). If operated by two-class 738s (same as domestic ops), it seems you get put at the front.

Funny enough, if you get a connecting flight with one USA domestic and one Mexico (transborder) flight, if you select the "Business" option from QFF, it will put you in Y for the domestic USA leg, and you get an advisory note as such. If you select the "First" option from QFF, it will put you in "J" for the transborder leg, and again the advisory note will tell you as such.

Sorry, using a smartphone I misread the OP and thought there was an internal USA connection.

No, AA do not sell first (F, A, P, Z) on two class international flights, so business (J, D, I, U, C) gets the gong for the pointy end cabin an the single segment trip.

This is what I was alluding too - with QFF, a business class award, say SJD-xDFW-LAX would have business for SJD-DFW and economy DFW-LAX.

SJD-LAX should definitely be Business/Economy seating.

On the same plane, domestically it is First/Economy, whereas internationally it is Business/Economy
(this also impacts those on Peurto Rico/Caribbean runs)..

Note also that a paid JASA will book into First domestically, whereas a Qantas oneworld award in Business will book into Economy domestically.

AA treat quite a bit of central america as if it is domestic (i.e. no AC lounge access unless travelling to Mexico City). Couldn't quite figure out exactly which were which but doesn't surprise me.

How many QF points would you burn for J or Y if you did a Classic/Partner award ticket?

A KUPP fare is USD387.46 non-stop SJD/LAX in J or USD398.46 via DFW which would be J SJD/DFW & F DFW/LAX with an overnight transit in DFW so you'd get a half day there if you wanted.

Up to you to decide whether it's worth hanging on to your QF points for other premium travel eg SYD/HKG that wasn't as cheap to purchase unlike a KUPP.

It's 14,000 Y and 24,000 J. I considered a rev. fare, but no VA partner (direct) on this route. I have no status with QF and not enough SC's to reach any level before my reset date which will be a couple of weeks after this flight. I have plenty of QFF points - the balance steadily increasing :)

If I were travelling on my own, no doubt I'd be doing non direct rev. flight/s.

Booked 2 x J SJD-LAX on QFF site which booked into U bucket @ 24,000 pts each + US$120. Unable to select seats, but the booking has allocated seats 6A & B (which is First class).

To be specific, it is the forward cabin being sold as Business.

As for the booking, call AA and get the booking reference off them - you should then be able to select seating on-line at AA.com.

I got the AA Record Locator off checkmytrip and changed seats online AA.com to 4E & F.
