I've been on a flight where I've got on, got off at the other end and checked the balance within a matter of 1-2 hours, and it's been updated THAT FAST.

.

The QF points for any QF flight usually post very soon (probably instantaneously) after the flight is 'closed' from an operational point of view. I am not sure of when this is but it is sometime after 'door closed' and before 'door open' at destination.

Anyone ever had the situation where they were due to go up a tier with a flight that would give them enough status credits just before the annual status credits expiration deadline, and by some unfortunate chance, that key flight wasn't recorded at the time - hence, they 'lost out' on going up a tier ?

If so, did you get it rectified / what was the outcome ?

Nope :)

In fact, I'm sitting here with a broken ankle thanking my lucky stars that I requalified for Platinum early in the year (before this happened) & the requal not due until June.
The other lovely thing is being a Life Gold Member :D

I seem to have continual problems on CX for some reason - I did a SYD - HKG - LHR - MAN return and out of the 6 flights on the trip, 2 sectors were missing (and still are 3 months after I raised it with QF cutomer services) though the other 4 are already lodged - where's the logic in that?

Annoyed with One World.... (rant)

I returned from a 4 week USA trip yesterday and thought I'd tell you about some annoyances on this trip!

First I was charged US$80 for a third checked in bag by AA on my way home. It was OK on the way over when I checked in with Q. But AA knew nothing about extra bag/weight allowance for Q. Gold flyers (Platinum OWA). My friend, who was dropping me off told me privately that in his opinion this was 'bullshit'. He was promptly told off for using this term by an eavesdropping AA employee, and was told to 'shut up'! Not wanting the fuss we toned down our conversation whilst the first employee checked on the extra bag situation. The oddball AA employee who just told my friend to ‘shut up’ stood across the counter listening to our conversation. I asked him if he was listening and he said 'yes'. Strange!!

I also asked if they could make sure the PRIORITY tags would be affixed as AA often forgets them. They did not do it then and never did later either. No big deal... just makes me think why bother with all this nonsense if you need to argue about it.

Technical problems with AA flight meant I was re-routed and I ended up waiting in LAX for 13 hours. The international lounge there has no computer access, and short of a wrapped sandwich and some fruit there is no food either. I checked into an airport hotel for the day.

Then on return home I checked my points balance and discovered I got no points for any of the AA flights, it stated 0 for both columns. I called up Qantas and they advised me that the ticket I had earned no points on the AA flights, and yes, AA could charge me for the extra bag. Wow, I had never heard of that! It was the second time I booked through Flight Centre, and knew I was on a special Qantas (USA via Japan) ticket where I had to overnight in Japan on the way over. Did not seem particularly cheap at $2K but I had to go to Tokyo in any case.

Also on this trip, my wife heard she got the job she had applied for earlier and had to start a week earlier than expected. No change to her ticket was allowed and she had to buy a new o/w ticket back to Australia. We understand conditions and did not argue with the extra unfortunate expense. We put her on a United flight home, stuff the alliance!

Another grudge on this trip was that both AA and Q. had the same movies on the long flights, which was not so bad except that AA now charges you for alcoholic beverages (which quenched my thirst quickly) making the trip particularly long and boring... With a few wines and ales the seats always seem more comfortable, you sleep better and get there quicker - and yes the hostesses do look prettier too with beer-goggles!

The food on AA was minimal as well; especially annoying as the no frill connecting 3hr AA flight to IAD had no beverage service either.

I can no longer see the point of flying One World. I have had my fair share of disappointments with them in the last 2 years (post 9/11?), and do not feel like reading all the fine prints and conditions or arguing. In the past I never had these issues.... Now it seems the order of the day....

Sorry about this rant .

But to finish on a good note, I bought a new digital camera (Fujifilm S7000) which I noticed was $900 duty free in Sydney for half that in the USA, and same with the accessories I wanted! Awesome camera.

waltervp, perhaps the situation could have been handled much better than your friend mouthing expletives to you about the CSA'a decision within earshot of the CSA - the other AA CSA or Supervisor was well within their rights to ensure that you did not continue in the same vein during the rest of the check-in procedure (don't forget they are still operating under the terrorism laws and they are jumpy about anybody creating a ruckus). Commonsense should always be uppermost in these situations...

Rather than abusing the CSA, perhaps you should have asked here about the allowances or read and understood the QFF Benefits Guidebook that clearly show the baggage allowances...understanding that the Gold FF (OW Emerald) privilege for baggage allowance is only on QF International flights (where you would get an extra 10kgs or one extra piece on USA/Canada flights...operated by QF). So both you and your friend were wrong and the AA CSA was correct...

You'd do well in the future to remember common courtesy (i.e. do unto others as you would like them to do unto you). Sorry, not much sympathy from me...you get it when it's due and it's not in this circumstance.

As for the FF points not posting for the AA flights, did you check the booking class against the QFF Terms & Conditions Clause 9.3:

9.3 Frequent Flyer Partner Airlines - Restrictions on Point Earning

9.3.1
...
(b) In addition to the Eligible Flight requirements in clause 9.2.1, the following Fare types and route restrictions apply to the earning of Points on certain Frequent Flyer Partner Airline and oneworld Alliance Airline flights. Fares and routes listed are those which are not eligible for earning Points unless otherwise specified:
.
.
American Airlines®: ...Discounted fares booked in E, L, O, Q, R, T, U, W, X and Z class. Fares booked in G, M, N, S, and V class will earn 50% of the base economy accrual rate. This will become your base economy accrual rate for the purpose of awarding a Status bonus

Now, as you stated:

...knew I was on a special Qantas (USA via Japan) ticket...

hopefully for you, it's merely an error between AA's system and QF's and by sending in a copy of your BP and ticket QF will quickly credit the SC's and points...however if not, then you only have yourself to blame.

I'll agree with you on the Baggage Tags...but that happens for most non-AA FF's..if you're AA they always appear, however it seems that us "cousins" in the OW alliance are always overlooked by AA CSA's...but I've never had the problem with QF CSA's based in the USA, they have been better trained to know the rules...

One World living up to its name...

I understand that, but the way the 'AA CSA' did that was totally unprofessional using another expletive! But I am not worried about this either, I understand they are stressed, maybe his partner didn't roll over that night... none of my business either. But in the past I have had many Q. tickets and assumed that the luggage I carry one way I can carry home too. This has always worked for some reason till now. Maybe my luck has run out. Same with the FF. points, I have always had the fortune to buy great value discounted economy class tickets and still receive 0.75 Qantas points per mile, even from partner airlines. Even where I did not fly with Qantas at all! Not to mention that I did not think this last ticket was a particular cheap one.

Also, I must admit I don't read all the fine print, program changes etc. I do not care about the minor details enough, but happily voice my disappointment when it actually affects me! This is better then reacting on program changes before they affect me.....

Anyway, not being loyal to any program makes flying more fun and interesting and flexible! Why bother using your alliance and status if you still get no points, unexpected charges and 13 hour layovers in lounges without internet (LA International when waiting for the LAX-MEL flight). A trip to Hawaii recently brought a similar disappointment where Qantas advised me that I could take a bike with me for free, but the inter-island flights charged me heavily for the bike in both directions. I realised my error there, but cannot help feeling a little let down by not being warned. Most international Qantas tickets include other airlines, and if enquiring about flights I expect to be told information for the ticket, not just the Qantas legs. Can't the ONE WORLD alliance live up to its name and streamline these benefits??

Like when using Telstra to call USA; other carriers get involved. Just because you are routed through some other carrier does that mean that that carrier could justifiably limit your call to 10 minutes or charge you extra? No!

In some ways I feel more liberated now that I do not have to feel 'loyal' - at the expense of a few minimal FF. points! The sky is the limit, watch out for me Aeroflot and Garuda!

I strongly disagree with this. In my opinion if you swear at someone you lose your right to expect them not to swear at you.

Particularly, as was the case here, when you were in the wrong (about the extra luggage allowance).

Enjoy Garuda and Aeroflot - rather you than me.

I think you should read the program fine print and be aware of the changes before lodging complaints. I have been a QFF members since 1991 and try to follow all the program changes so I can get maximum value from it. But I do not recall QF ever giving 0.75 points per mile for any fare type. They have used many different formulas, including 25% and 50% of flown miles, and 0.7 points per km, but I am not aware that QF has ever offered 0.75 points per mile.
