Hey All,

Recently started redeeming QFF points for the first time,
I am planning my trip to Asia next Jan-Feb, as I have family in Malaysia.
I redeemed MEL-KUL MAS business class. For the return, only BA had Premium Econ SIN-SYD, whereas all partner airlines only had economy. I went ahead and booked BA.

Now doing the maths, do you think it was worth it?
SIN-SYD, 59k QFF points + $324AUD surchage.
Cash fare :
One way SIN-SYD $2.1k AUD
Return is $2.1k AUD as well lol with each leg being $1,082AUD.

I am calculating based on the return fare single leg of $1,082AUD, which only yields ~$1.3 cents per point. Would you calculate it this way as well?

It really comes down to how it compares with MEL-KUL (return) using $?

Sometimes it’s better to pay than use points if there’s decent cash fares. But in the current climate of buggerall award seats and still relatively high cash fares, it’s the airlines holding the aces…

BTW, did you look at CGK? Quite a lot of availability on QF - albeit ex SYD. I assume connections from MEL show up? $50 o/n at a CGK hotel (if you don’t won’t to risk a mis-connect on seperate tix) plus $50 eVOA (each way) can still work out good value.

Redeemed MEL-KUL for 75,000 qff points + $145 surcharge,
MEL-KUL 1 way $3,359
Return one leg is $2,455.
I guess if I calculate using $2,455 it will be $3.08cents pp, with an average of $2.18cents pp if including the BA redemption

I thought philippine airlines had cheap one ways out of KUL for about $1400 in business? Might be worth exploring.

PEY is ok for a 7 hour flight… just.

because the flight is booked ex-Singapore the surcharges are what's on that page.

those dates are sometime in April 14, 15, 15, 17, 18, 19, 23, 27, 28, 29 and May 12, 13, 24, 25, 28 and June 4 & 7 - from what I understand from that conversation, there was availability in the nearer future (as in not after June 2024) but not in the long distant.

Otherwise, you can go look about 3 months ahead and see if you can find one for the date you had in mind

Thank you, I will be travelling in Feb 2025, looking very bare in the website, however I am a lowly Bronze. Will keep my eyes open if any Emirates J popped up by any chance!

Ideally in J as it would be the return leg of our honeymoon as well 🤣🤣 thats why had to settle for BA premium Econ hahaa
then you may be best served considering the PH J via Manila as that's $1,112 in Jan and $900 in Feb

yes.. that is very tempting.. ~$900aud business one way from KL-MEL with a 3.5 hour layover, compared to BA SIN-SYD premium Econ, and I will still need to purchase SYD-MEL tickets. Do you have any experience with PH airline vs BA? I am reading some reviews at the moment

yeah, the Phillipines fare has a long layover in Manila .... Sighs

or there's Royal brunei for $1,469 from KL to Melbourne (overnight)

i think that 3.5 hour is pretty alright, total flight time 15.5hr. They have another alternative flight which has total flight time of 26.5hr with a 14.5hr layover lol...
