QF's new baggage policy effective 01 June 2011 is a week old today but has already raised the hackles of some of the airline's most loyal and frequent travellers whilst at the same time being more generous for less frequent flyers.

One has to wonder whether QF will actually gain more money as in many examples QF are charging $30.00 for an extra bag whereas previously an extra 20 kilo suitcase (in excess of the first 23 kgs of luggage) was charged at $10.00 per kilo so up to and including 31 May the airline would have charged $200.00 for that same suitcase.

It was barely over two years ago that QF introduced the previous baggage system that ceased 31 May 2011 with claims that they were the only airline in the world that had a different excess baggage charges for domestic & international flights & declared charging by weight was a fairer system.

One must question the motives as to why the airline has now done a backflip by eliminating what was ostensibly a fairer system & at the same time penalising its most loyal frequent flyers in the process.

With Virgin Australia introducing new livery, planes, lounges, terminal infrastructure & not to mention a new codeshare arrangement with Singapore Airlines, QF should be doing everything to retain business from its customers however this baggage policy is an invitation to try out their competitor.

The following scenarios are examples of various passengers travelling domestically in Australia with luggage under both the old & new baggage system & whether they now win or lose.

1. Frequent flyer Silver, Gold or Qantas Club member with two pieces of luggage @ 15kg each total 30kg
Old system multiple pieces with total weight not exceeding 33 kilos with extra kilos charged @ $10.00 per kilo so nil excess due.
New system one piece @ 32 kilos only ie $30.00 excess now due (LOSE)

2. Frequent flyer bronze, two pieces of luggage @ 20kg each
Old system multiple pieces with total weight not exceeding 23 kilos with extra kilos charged @ $10.00 per kilo. Old cost of excess 17 kilos excess @ $10.00 = $170.00.
New system first bag up to 23 kilos free & second bag charged @ $30.00 per piece pax saves $140.00 as excess due only $30.00 (WIN)

3. Frequent flyer Platinum or Chairmans Lounge, three pieces of luggage @ 12 kg each
Old system multiple pieces with total weight not exceeding 38 kilos with extra kilos charged @ $10.00 per kilo so nil excess due.
New system first two bags up to 32kg free, additional bag up to 32kg charged @ $30.00 per bag ie $30.00 excess now due (LOSE)

4. Frequent flyer Platinum or Chairmans Lounge, two pieces of luggage @ 30 kg each
Old system multiple pieces with total weight not exceeding 38 kilos with extra kilos charged @ $10.00 per kilo. Old cost of excess 22 kilos @ $10.00 per kilo - $220.00.
New system two pieces at 32 kilos, total allowance 64 kg ie nil excess due (WIN)

5. Tradesman frequent flyer bronze two pieces of luggage - one suitcase @ 12kg & one toolbag @ 10kg
Old system multiple pieces with total weight not exceeding 23 kilos with extra kilos charged @ $10.00 per kilo. Old cost of excess nil as pax only had 22 kilos total.
New system first bag up to 23 kilos free with first additional bag up to 23 kilos ie $30.00 excess now due (LOSE)

6. Film crew 4 pax nil status with QF, seven pieces of luggage totalling 138 kg
Old system multiple pieces with total weight not exceeding 23 kilos pp with extra kilos charged @ $10.00 per kilo. Old cost of excess (after first 92 kilos free) 46 kilos @ $10.00 per kilo total $460.00.
New system pax saves $370.00 as 3 extra bags up to 23 kilos @ $30.00 each = $90.00 excess due (WIN)

7. Frequent Flyer Silver/Gold or Qantas Club - Boys fishing trip with 5 pieces of luggage incl. fishing rod, tackle box, bag, swag & box of frozen fish total 33 kilos
Old system multiple pieces with total weight not exceeding 33 kilos with extra kilos charged @ $10.00 per kilo so nil excess due.
New system 1st piece up to 23 kilos free, 2nd piece $30.00 with 3rd, 4th & 5th pieces charged @ $60.00 per piece ie excess now due $210.00 (LOSE)

8. Family 2 adults 1xchild 1xinfant with three suitcases 2 strollers, 2 car seats & one portacot total 100 kilos
Old system multiple pieces with total weight not exceeding 23 kilos per adult and child with extra kilos charged @ $10.00 per kilo. Infant allowed one piece eg stroller or car seat up to approx 15 kilos eg 69 kilos free plus 15 kilos waived for stroller leaving 16 kilos excess @ $10.00 excess due $160.00 or leave some items behind & pay nil excess.
New system one piece up to 23 kilos for adults & child plus 3 x infant items & 2 x additional child items up to 23 kilos each at no additional cost eg strollers, car seats, portacost so nil excess due (WIN)

So I guess you're saying I lose (QF Gold).

I have alternatives, EK Gold and Star Gold.

So I don't really care.

They'll be real helpful domestically. Not.

Two brands of star gold should be helpful domestically soon. But of course star gold achieved on UA isn't one of those two. ;-)

But your point is valid, QF have completely different set of rules for international travel.
