I'd be very interested! What exactly is involved? (I'm SG btw)
Purchase a domestic return ticket SYD-MEL for June 17 but make sure you select flights QF74/QF73 which depart from the international terminal.

As Platinums I will guest kpc into the F lounge and Mal will guest you into the F lounge. If all goes to plan we should have around 45 minutes in the SYD F lounge and 90 minutes in the MEL F lounge.

I will get to have a much more thorough inspection of the SYD F lounge in July. ;)

As the flight arrives in Mel at 0845, and leaves at 1130, I hope to spend a little more than 90 minutes in the Flounge in Mel;)

You guys should have gone for QF187; scheduled departure from MEL Int 20 mins later @ 11:50am. ;)

I assume that QF 73/74 are the same plane...so if 73 is late in, we will be late leaving Mel, and we still will get plenty of time in Mel Flounge:idea:

Certainly the same type of aircraft; 2¾ hours should be enough time to turn the aircraft around.

However, I believed the MEL/SYD QF73/QF74 were positioning segments with different operating aircraft rather than a turnaround. Please correct me if that's wrong.

Last month, when I flew MEL-SFO (but getting off at SYD) I heard an on-board announcement of aircraft change for continuing passengers.

There also seemed to be a crew change, as many of the QF staff from on-board, were standing around the carousel in SYD after the flight. (Noteably my bag [WP - but only "priority - orange tagged"] was beaten out by the pilot & co-pilots' suit packs (assumed). Desrvedly so, as only I and they knew where to stand & wait at the carousels. LOL It was a close race however, as all three of them came out together, followed by a wait...so I walked off, to the gaggle of customs staff lamenting that this was only a "domestic" LOL)

As far as I can figure OJF operated QF74, and OED operated QF73 today-but exactly where the aircraft change occurs, who knows :)

VH-OJD operated SYD-MEL
VH-OJC operated MEL-SYD.

Same crew (brought some laughs to both myself and at least one member of the crew who stared, wondered and then finally commented "but you were on the flight here? (or words to that effect)).

It really is weird.
QF74 SFO-SYD is a 3 class plane. SYD-MEL 2 class.
QF73 MEL-SYD is a 2 class plane. SYD-SFO 3 class.

Maybe they rotate 2 class 747's onto the SYD-MEL vv route when there are no F pax travelling to/from MEL?

Don't really know. With the current shortage of Qantas 747's, a rotation of a 2 class plane onto the domestic sector (with some compo for F pax) sounds like what Qantas would do.

If you look through the thread, and on some other threads, there are 3 of us doing the same flights. I call it an F lounge run! It originally started with me helping out kpc, who only has QF Gold status, by offering to do a QF74/QF73 same day return so I can guest him into the new F lounges and then Mal showed interest as well.

Anyone else up for an F lounge run?

I think you will find it is more a re-positioning flight for the inbound 2-class QF26 and the outgoing QF25 aircraft so they can get them cycled through Sydney for maintenance purposes.

As kpc and I relocated to the exit row we had a lengthy conversation with the CSM and a FA. They were surprised that we did SYD-MEL-SYD that morning just to sample the F lounges. For me itt was actually an interesting conversation and got some useful information about QFs future through the eyes of an employee.

I am not certain but from the conversation with the CSM it appears that the switch to 2 class aircarft for SYD-MEL-SYD happens regularly. I don't remember the exact details from yesterday but the FAs mentioned that QF74 VH-OJD continued on as QF25 MEL-AKL-LAX and QF73 VH-OJC continued on as QF5 SYD-FRA.

What was interesting, for me anyway, is that they mentioned that QF mainline will be receiving the new 787s not Jetstar. Apparently QF will be offloading 767s to Jetstar. Anyone care to speculate on the accuracy of this statement? Is it possible that someone at QAN has finally realised that Jetstar is not the success that they had hoped?

I don't think there is a point in revealing too much more of the conversation on a public internet forum.

Specualtion was that JQ was getting the first dreamliners. I thought I saw that confirmed in an interview with the JQ CEO on flyertalk.

Point noted re public forum given your flight date and numbers are pubic - might get someone in trouble potentially.
