Airbus and Qatar end bitter dispute over A350 surface issues

Some extracts:

Airbus and Qatar Airways have reached an “amicable” settlement in their bitter two-year dispute over the surface degradation of near new A350s.

The case was watched closely by other airlines including Qantas which has 12 A350-1000s on order from the European manufacturer, with deliveries due to start in 2025.

Late last year, the dispute over the A350s found its way to London’s High Court, where Qatar argued other airlines including Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, Vietnam Airlines and Cathay Pacific had all experienced similar issues.

Qatar’s legal team claimed Airbus had reached settlements with these and other airlines, and adopted design changes in the production process to prevent accelerated surface degradation.

The case appeared set for a lengthy hearing, but on Thursday, Airbus and Qatar Airways announced a settlement had been reached.

“A repair project is now underway and both parties look forward to getting these aircraft safely back in the air,” said the joint statement.

“The details of the settlement are confidential, and the parties will now proceed to discontinue their legal claims.”

The settlement agreement was “not an admission of liability for either party”, the statement said, adding that Qatar Airways and Airbus would now move forward and work together as partners.

It’s understood the order for A321neos had been revived, but the first deliveries would not occur until 2026, three years later than planned.

One would hope the cancellation of the inferior 737max in favour of the vastly superior A320 NEO family may be in order.

This was the best news when I read about it! It will unlock so much capacity and very efficient aircraft.

How long do you guys think it will take QR to reactivate all the A350s and when will we have qsuites back in Australia? I recall QR wanted to double flights to AU as well.

There are currently 4 QR flights per day ex Australia with QSuites. 1x ADL, 1x BNE, 2x MEL
PER and SYD operate the A380.
If they are granted the extra capacity I’d think we will see a few more daily’s
