Qatar was very excited to announce the return of DOH -> CBR - Qatar Airways Resumes Canberra-Doha Flights

This involved a technical stop in MEL. Today I received an email advising they are cancelling the onward journey from MEL-CBR. I have a already booked a hotel for the night in Canberra (as the arrival time into Canberra was 1.50AM), and a business class flight with Virgin that afternoon to Brisbane (my final destination). This is a huge inconvenience and stress now, just 2 weeks out from flying. I booked the business class flight from CBR to BNE as I needed the additional luggage allowance. I will have to pay cancellation fees for that, and rebook a new flight and hotel. Cash fares on both Qantas and Virgin are now $400+ for economy and no rewards flights that I can see for Oct 16th when I need to return from MEL - BNE on Qantas. Virgin has some business class rewards for 158,400 points, when I paid 15,500 points for the original booking (and I don't have 100,000 Virgin points to book with, even if I wanted to)

1. Anyone else's QR onward flight to Canberra get cancelled? Trying to work out if it is just this day (15th Oct) or if they are pushing back start dates of the flights to CBR?

2. Would I be entitled to any refunds in terms of points or cash given this change? The flight now stops in MEL instead of CBR... did I pay any extra points or cash initially for it to go to CBR?

3. What are my chances travel insurance will assist with any of this? Or will they refer back to airline? For example I booked the original CBR -> BNE in business using points (was around $49.50 and 15500 points), now the flights are like $1000-$2000 for cash fares? Does travel insurance normally cover any of that?

4. I booked the hotel using a $100 Qantas Hotel voucher, which is supposedly non-refundable.... given this situation is out of my control, anyone else had any luck with Qantas re-issuing the $100 voucher or offer any other compensation?

Interesting that it's been canned before it even started. What happened? Poor loads?

If you were on a single ticket you could have been reaccomdated DOH-BNE. Sorry that doesn't help but travel insurance may help with cancellation fees. It won't cover new flights.

This is why I never book new routes.

At least two other members affected by the same issue, mentioning their woes in this thread:

Assuming you booked through Qantas, I can't see how Qantas should get out of their requirement to provide you with transportation to CBR, although whether it will arrive in time to make your separate flight to BNE, they don't necessarily have to guarantee.

Canberra was always the third wheel wasn't it?

I wonder why Etihad didn't increase Sydney and Melbourne to double daily. They only use 2 slots now, prior they had 6 arrivals daily. No trade secret that these routes are very profitable at the moment.

I am flying on the 1st of October (which I believe is the start date for this service) and the same thing has happened to my flight as well. Luckily my final destination was Melbourne but booked through to Canberra as I couldn’t get rewards seats to Melbourne. My hotel for the night and next day flight were cancellable so no extra charge.

Qatar didn’t offer any any alternatives when they called which was a bit surprising (although I didn’t push), surely if you booked a flight to Canberra they need to get you to Canberra through some alternative means?

Qatar actually called you? Isn't Qantas responsible for that given the booking was through them?

Has your ticket been re-issued?

I actually need to get to Brisbane. Like you, this was the only option I had to get a business class rewards flight back to Australia. I don't care about Canberra apart from the hotel that I had booked there for the night and the flight from Canberra to Brisbane on 16th Oct.

yes, Qatar called me yesterday (I’m in Rome for the moment) to advise of the changes. Ticket was re-issued within the hour. No contact from Qantas although MMB on the Qantas website reflects the new destination

Apologies I assumed yours wasn't a Reward seat for which there are cancellation fees:
Damn.. it says 4500 or $35? Which one is it? Do they just flip a coin and decide?

Maybe they prioritised you since you travelling soon... my flight only on 15th Oct.

On the ABC news tonight the report was that Qatar hoped to start the service to CBR in December so anyone with the MEL-CBR leg or further will need to make changes.

Interestingly to get around the capacity regulations the flight is now starting and finishing in AD I’m led to believe. The ADL-MEL tag will be just used for freight only though, no passengers from what I was told today

I was wondering if the air services agreement between Australia and Qatar had been updated to allow more than 28 weekly frequencies into the controlled airports. Maybe not, then...

I guess the costs are pulled back significantly operating a Adelaide cargo turnaround. Essentially just two pilots and that’s it.

Running a 777 to Canberra and back with a dozen passengers and all the associated costs would be eye watering. Not to mention cargo would be minimal.

Connecting flights don’t really carry a price premium with it either, well for many domestic ports anyway. I do wonder how much cargo they will be carrying, wouldn’t imagine it would be that much.

I didn't think Cargo only flight would be allowed for the bi-laterals.

I wonder if there are negotiations currently to increase the cap

Is there a substantial market for MEL-ADL cargo but not MEL-CBR? It's presumably not DOH-xMEL-ADL cargo since they're carrying pax to MEL and there's also a nonstop DOH-ADL.

Still a shortage of freight capacity coming in and with EK pulling out of ADL there is a hole in the market that needs to be filled. Perhaps QR have crunched the numbers and worked out that they can make another DOH-ADL freight service work.
As for MEL-ADL cargo there is nowhere near enough capacity hence why most of it is sent via road (aswell as cost in some instances)
