Greetings Everyone! This is my first post on AFF.

I recently received some QTags from Qantas. Just wondering if these new tags should be removed when travelling through non NGCI or international airports?

All the best, Flatwhite

Welcome to AFF

The tags are only good for domestic flights. Some people have used them on international. But I don't see the point, myself.

I’ve used mine through BNE once, which doesn’t have NGCI, and the check-in agent used a hand scanner to scan the luggage tags but on my last few trips they’ve just tagged them in the old way and ignored the QTags altogether. So to answer your question - I don’t bother taking them off for domestic flights but I wouldn’t leave them on for international flights.

I left mine on for international travel through LHR to MUC and return. No problems.
Left them on as an experiment to see how they held up, and no damage to report..

I’m perhaps being conservative, but when I’ve done ?ONE?’s in the past, and depending on where we go, the luggage can take a bit of a beating (I’m looking at you, South America). I’ve had things ripped off bags before and I think it would be a PITA to replace the tags when returning home when they weren’t useful on the international sectors anyway. Just my opinion.

Be careful with leaving them on when you're not using them as there have been reports that sometimes the tags have caused bags to be misrouted when landing in SYD or any other airport that uses the RFID tags. The RFID will also be readable through the bag, so just putting them in the top pocket of the bag may not prevent this from happening.

QF may have resolved this issue - I don't know. But something to be aware of.

For the reasons mentioned I won't be using mine internationally. I have yet to take them out of the little box they came in since I hardly check luggage. Plus.. I like the do it yourself KLM ones I ordered last year with my kitty far too much to switch :p

Just show them off on your carryon like people seem want to do, as if PS is something to flaunt :p

 There's someone in our office that does that!

Slightly off topic question - I'm about to qualify for WP (5 SC's to go). I still haven't received my SG NGCI card or tags (asked the call centre and standard response "will get them early this year" ... as far as I'm concerned, "early" is now over).

When I qualify for WP and eventually get my WP tags - do I also get the old style tags as well? Or do you only get the new QTags instead?

This is the issue that concerns me a little!

Thanks for the replies.

As I understand things, you will only receive the new QTags. I qualified SG early to mid 2010 and received the 'old' tags, followed by the new QTags in about October 2010.

I qualified WP in early November and received the new WP QTags only in early December.

I am using my 'old' SG baggage tags on luggage, as at least you can write some contact details 'inside' those tags.
