Queensland State Election 2020

Well I have just read through the amendments to the QLD Public Health Act for Covid 19 and I can't find anywhere a section which says the Premier or Minister for Health can't modify a public health direction by the CHO.
I did find this part as to when a CHO must revoke a public health order.

362E When public health directions must be revoked

The chief health officer must revoke a public health direction as soon as reasonably practicable after the chief health officer is satisfied the direction is no longer necessary to assist in containing, or to respond to, the spread of COVID-19 within the community.
Now seeing the CHO is on the record as saying she needs to see 28 days of no community transmission in order to lift the travel bans and the ACT has gone 60+ days does this not mean the CHO should revoke that ban.I mean a month after the ACT satisfied her precondition is pushing the definition of as soon as reasonably practicable isn't it?

this morning

The Australian Medical Association’s Queensland branch president, Chris Perry, said the group supported Young’s scientific decisions during the Covid-19 crisis.

“We’re an evidence-based organisation and we follow what the chief health officer says,” he told reporters on Sunday. “What the chief health officer in Queensland says goes, it’s the law.”

Perry said there had been many “stressful” personal attacks on Young over her health advice to the government.

He said the criticism had mostly been by online trolls but he acknowledged the federal government also had a ”different point if view”.

“Back off. Leave her alone. We think this chief health officer is doing a great job,” he said. “We’re doing a very, very good job in this state. Probably because Queensland politicians are listening very carefully to a very well qualified physician.“
To me it’s the kind of support given by an AFL football president to a misbehaving football player. All about mental wellness and not being party to causing or leading to a self-harm situation. But where are they whenever it’s to do with another person not on their team?

I'd like to hear the AMA public stance on the metal health of the powerless people unable to see their dying loved ones, the '000,000s of unemployed, those unable to get the health care they or their loved ones require

Regardless of Covid19 and border closures, it's only been a little over 5 years since Campbell Newman. Queensland voters may have short memories but possibly not that short.

At the start of the Covid emergency in QLD, parliament made law that all such decisions must be made by the CHO. According to law professor at UQ Graeme Orr this morning on ABC radio, by that law the CHO (or persons authorised by the CHO) makes the decisions. Parliament or politicians have no authority to override. It would require an act of parliament to change this law.

In addition to that current Opposition Leader has little traction in the media. We also know in a crisis, war etc people often stick with who they know. So I think Labour will get back in....just.

Be interesting to watch and see the effect of a carefully coordinated industry attack on the QLD governments irrational border closure decisions - led by Bain/VA2 and Flight Centre - both big QLD businesses here but also Helloworld and Qantas joining in....

It’s going to go for four weeks... it’s a sustained campaign and going to be a bumpy ride to the election!

Let's see... Virgin: no refunds for passengers. Qantas: untold heartache by directing people to take credit vouchers, and then massive delays on refunds. Flight Centre: $350 fee per passenger where the airline canceled a booking and gave a full refund to FC.

Unfortunately these commercial operations don't have much credibility when it comes to their 'welfare' credentials.

While AP remains premier of Queensland I will not holiday in that state. Sorry to the small business owners whose voters are trapped in the LNP seats, but the way that this premier has behaved to other Australians displays a lack of morality.

Usual number of trips to QLD per annum = 5 including places like Longreach. I’m not alone in this sentiment, by the way.

What’s wrong with holidays in your own state? Not enough sunshine or beaches? :)

As I said I have read the legislation and i can find no such condition in the new Covid 19 addition to the public health Act.
In Fact in the Public health act it is the Minister of Health who has the power to end the State of Emergency not the CHO.
Also in the body of the existing Act prior to Covid the Minister of Health has the power to change a directive of the CHO.
It would have been good if your Professor could quote the section of the Act that says the Premier or Health Minister can't over rule the CHO.

As usual, you are misquoting non related issues. The minister can end the state of emergency but neither the minister or the Premier can interfere in health exclusion issues in the power of the CHO as explicitly stated in the legislation. You obviously haven’t read the Covid 19 emergency act.

Like most other Queenslanders, I see no reason, at the moment, to end the state of emergency.

I’m in Brunswick Heads right now.

Enjoy your 20% unemployment rate.
I’m holidaying in Queensland this Xmas for the first time in many years so our businesses get our patronage, as are many. Many resorts and accommodation are already booked out for the Xmas period.

Queensland needs to import tourists.

All for a quiet xmas. :p

Having businesses closed because of a Plague outbreak won’t help during the Xmas period.

We got the last rooms available in the resorts we have chosen for Xmas and NY.

At the risk of being OT, but to bring some levity to the discourse.

I put a ban on McDonalds for some slight I felt....made 7 years by going to Hungry Jacks and Burger King as my substitute. It all came crashing down in Dubai airport I think, where they only had McDonalds....lol
