Query on Qantas Club and business lounges

Hoping someone can shed some light on my query.........

Will be transiting HKG on a J Oneworld RTW. CX into HKG and then QAN back to BNE with an 11 hr stopover. We were intending to use the CX arrivals lounge and the QAN J Lounge to fill in the time but from the previous discussion it seems we probably won't be able to get our QAN BPs until 3 hrs before (unless we use the airport express checkin - which is increasing in likelihood). Can anyone confirm if we will need to collect our baggage from CX and then check it in with QAN or not. I'd expect the bags would be transferred for us but, with an 11 hr gap, I'm not so sure. Given that we are connecting to a QF flight on a single PNR, when can we get our BPs to get access to the QAN lounge in this scenario? Difference to the previous discussion being that we're transiting rather than starting our trip in HKG.

In short:
1- CX can check your bag through to BNE (single PNR or NOT) and print your QF BPs
2- You can remain airside in HKG and enjoy the CX or QF J lounges

Firstly I think you should be able to have your luggage checked thorugh and you should be able to receive your onward boarding passes at the same time.

And if worse comes to worse and your luggage is not checked through to final destination you should be able to receive onward passes at HKG transfer counter and if you show them the luggage tags they will also transfer your luggage without you leaving airside. I have done this many times on connections between a range of carriers.

Just as a reference point we (father and I) arrived in HKG earnly morning and departed late at night (~16 hours) and had boarding passes, used the lounges airside as transit passengers and then asked for special permission to leave airport and return later that night.

You guys need to spend more time in the PER QP. As much as I don't mind it I really notice the positive difference in the food when I get to enter a J Lounge.

PER QP would be full of CUBS (Cashed Up Bogans) wouldn't it??

Yes you get the FIFO guys heading up for their shifts complete with their Tapout gear. However there are plenty of Pilbara daytrippers that would be like most "business" people except their attire is Hi Vis.

On topic: I'll reiterate what you quoted. As much as some have complained about the BNE Dom J Lounge I find it a complete step up from the standard Q Lounge. For some reason I notice it more at breakfast.

I am looking to trying out both Qantas Club and Qantas J Lounge. Sectors will be SYD-MEL-SYD
Which would be the better J lounge to try out?

I will book a Red E deal one way (upgrade to J using 8000 miles) and one way I will use 8000 miles for a Y seat.

I am QF NB but will use CX Gold to access QP.

Flight times flexible but looking to depart SYD at approx 9am and return from MEL just after Lunch.

Thanks,
K.

I much prefer the SYD J lounge, I think because it's larger, but both the MEL and SYD J lounges are great!

Is the SYD Dom J lounge always crowded? As crowded as the QP at SYD?

Also should I go for the 767 or 737 for SYD-MEL-SYD? both Y and J classes.

If you go between 6-8am and 4-7pm on a weekday, expect it to be busy.

I would go the 767 or the A330 if you can find it flying :)

Thanks. I will be going 9am and probably 2PM or 3 PM on the return flight. So looks like out of the peak hours.

SYD is probably the better business lounge of the 2.

It does get busy but not that often.

Not much diff between the two - I'd go J lounge in the afternoon when the bar is open.

In MEL J I do like the 'quiet' area behind the front desk with the big leather lounge sofa but on the whole I'd give SYD J the nod.
