Question about reward seats eligibility

I am aware that I can use my points to book reward flights for myself, my partner, and any other close relative. I'm wondering if I can include on the booking (along with myself and my partner) a close friend to whom I am not related?

I believe this to be not possible with Qantas. Is Virgin any kinder?
