Hi all,
Just seeking tips for papa to get 80 SCs over 5 weeks to get him to Gold. Flying from Sydney.

A quick SYD-CBR return in J will do the trick. Can be done for less than $700 on the weekend 01-02 May.

Of course you can purchase a QP membership for about the same cost.

Easiest is to fly Business class SYD-xCBR-SYD; that's 40 SC each way for around $700.

Thank you. My dad's Silver and the 80 SCs will get him to 700 SCs, across the threshold for Gold on first occasion. Will require 600 SCs in future years. He is a QC life member but cannot access CX lounge, for instance.
I have just checked QF and he can go to syd-cns-syd twice for 80 SCs - $556! Accommodation is not an issue - zero cost.

J return to CBR would be a better option IMHO as less time in air and could spend the day in CBR looking at the sites.

I'm in exactly the same situation but need 80 ex MEL by the end of May.
I am sure somebody would suggest Jetstar but here is an idea for travel on Anzac Day long weekend.

MEL-BNE-SYD-CBR-SYD-BNE-ADL-MEL

All up 80 SCs for $661 + overnight accommodation in BNE or ADL.

Forgot there was a NQ sale on, that’s pretty good value!

MEL-BNE-SYD-CBR-SYD-BNE-ADL-MEL

All of that for only $661 on JQ? I didn’t think such a fare on a flex ticket was possible. You sure you’re not just looking at light fares there?

If he is like me and point rich but SC poor - you could do an Any Seat Award. I just booked 2 x SYD-HBA in J - $120ish & 45 000ish points = 60SC.

One of the best options I've seen in relation to Anytime Awards if you're interested in the maxing SC's is to fly SYD-MEL-ADL-ASP-ADL-MEL-SYD in J. It comes in at under 100,000 points return if you find the right days, earns 280 SC's and can be done in one day (well so long as you don't mind starting the day at 6am - just be sure to bring your appetite! :) ).

No, no, no. On the current QF sale for Anzac Day.

Would people burn 100,000 QFF points just like that for 280 SCs? For 140,000 QFF points I could get a Oneworld award that is going to be a lot more valuable than 280 SCs but then I haven't got QFF points coming out of my ears either....

The 100,000 points is if you pay for the taxes with points as well - otherwise you can book it for 72,000 points + $293.22 if you prefer to pay taxes and charges with cash. Plus you'll earn points for the flights as well, whereas with the Oneworld award you won't.

I certainly agree with you that if I was spending the points I'd prefer to spend them on a Oneworld award too, but for someone who is points rich and time poor then being able to start and finish their SC run on the same day may be appealing.

Now that has got me thinking. If one only needs to visit a few destinations along the way then it is possible to grab an Any Seat Award to the USA and from LHR back to SIN/BKK/LHR and then Australia. Use a Classic award from USA-UK, do some cheap YUPs/KUPS in the USA, some classic awards intra-Europe and some cheap Air Asia flights in Asia.

Now here is a challenge. If I can keep the total cost to around 200,000 QFF points then with the Any Seat Award earning SCs and QFF points (with 100% bonus for a Platinum) the net QFF points required would be close to 140,000 QFF points required for original Oneworld award but I have also earned SCs. Interesting thought and probably too good to be true.

I just read thread elsewhere on AFF about ASA and wonder what are other possibilities for obtaining 80SCs using qff points. Ex Sydney.

Any Seat Award? When? Tomorrow? How about SYD-CBR in business class flying out at 17:25 and returning at 19:40?

Will earn 80 SCs and 2,500 QFF points and requires 41,138 QFF points or 32,000 QFF points and AUD118.44 for Any Seat Award.

Sounds good to me.

Makes me think again about the KF points thru Westpac SQ platinum cards that I accumulated over past 11 months or so - half mil of them. Anyway, that could be off topic here.

It may be off-topic but it is a relevant point and I am starting to question my decision as well.

- On SQ a SYD-BKK return is 46,750 Kris Flyer miles and ~AUD400 in taxes and surcharges.
- on QF a SYD-BKK return is 60,000 QFF points and ~AUD330 in taxes and surcharges and as a Platinum earns 18,736 QFF points and 60 SCs

Thanks everyone for your feedback. In the end I decided on the spur of the moment to do MEL-CBR return using J ASA for 32,000 points plus tax which I completed this morning, so will will be WP as soon as the flights credit.
