Looks like no sales for the moment but for a friend in Sydney, I am looking for cost-effective ideas for earning 40 SCs before 31 May. Could consider hop to AKL if necessary. LAN perhaps?

Qantas.com.au:
  • SYD/AKL/SYD $433
  • MEL/AKL/MEL $413
Qantas.com.au/Qantas.co.nz:
  • SYD/AKL/SYD $374
  • MEL/AKL/MEL $365

But factor in cost of overnight in AKL and the OMG O'clock departure AKL-SYD.

Easiest will be try and get e-deal or special SYD-CBR-MEL-CBR-SYD or similar east coast routings.

Could try and get cheapie to Nth Qld (CNS/TSV) and do SYD-BNE-TSV-BNE-SYD would do it.

This gets harder as time goes, the OP has 18 days to complete travel. (More to the point, any QF domestic sales will not encompass that period).

A $332 JQi SC trip SYD/MEL earns 40 SC's.

That's a sensible suggestion. Thank you. No hotel, transport, etc. Airport to Airport. Return trip will be additional (up to $125 with QF). Starclass seems to be available domestically to Melbourne only.

Code:
Sydney - Melbourne
11:05 12:35 330 JQ29 Tue
15:15 16:45 330 JQ35 Tue & Sat

Melbourne - Sydney
09:00 10:25 330 JQ36 Wed
12:00 13:25 330 JQ30 Fri
14:15 15:40 330 JQ3 Mon

I didn't think there were any domestic star classes?

SYD-CBR $326 Business
CBR-SYD $90 Y

Available this weekend and next.

Otherwise SYD-CBR Y return $180 x2 = $360.

Boring but cheaper (just) then the *class MEL option

They're the domestic legs of an international ticket. You can book them, but there aren't many.

Yeah, I'm assuming they're hard to find? Because I've done a lot of dummy searches for the ones mentioned on the last page (jq29,35 etc) and can't seem to find *class seats anywhere.

Easy!

  • Search on the days and ports as noted.
  • make sure you select "Melbourne - Tullamarine".
  • DO NOT select "Melbourne (All Airports)" or "Melbourne - Avalon"

Ahh there was my problem, I was doing all airports! Thanks serfty, the things you learn :)

Just sleep at the airport.

Not in AKL, everything shuts overnight and doesn't reopen until 4am (inc QP). Can't even get a coffee to help you through the night.

SYD - CBR (or SYD - CBR - MEL - CBR - SYD) earns a lot of points \ SC's for a very short distance + cost for $370, and that is an easy day trip with no o'nighters. Whilst yes a long day, add an extra $35 and it could even have you home mid afternoon.

It's a pity there is no system where you can pay for SC using cash or miles... Say if you have less than 50 points to go to the next tier then that could be an option (rather than taking a seat some one else could occupy)

I'm only 35 before PS (by 30 June)... I have a on more trip planned at 20SC (Mel-Syd-Mel discount economy) so I only need 15.... (hard to travel solo or upgrade the seat as I am traveling with my wife and daughter...)

I have comfortably slept more than a dozen times in AKL over the last few years*.

While the shops do indeed close, the international terminal does not. Nor do security staff walk around waking people up. Sleeping is easy (and if you know where to go, reasonably comfortable).

* Do the maths: 1am arrival, 7am departure. Sleep for free from ~1:30am 'til 5:30am at airport or take shuttlebus/taxi to Hotel; be asleep by 2:30am, awake at 5:0am back at airport by 6am for cost of transport to/from airport and hotel.

Long day? try doing it twice in one day...

Amusing that after having done that status run in Dec i have now been comped to WP until Sep 2010 so it only made a real difference for one overseas flight...
