To be honest I found the OP long winded, so you are correct but the point remains the same.

To those finding the comments clever, do you feel that the banner at the cricket today that reads Kentucky Fried Poms clever or an ignorant attempt at being funny?

Some sporting banter is inevitable. 'kentucky fried poms' seems on the humorous side, and both sides give as good as they get :)

The violence in Melbourne today between two rival sporting teams (not related to cricket) was despicable.

No arrests and no complaints of assault yet it is despicable? The Melbourne media has been shown to be very anti-the world game when it comes to incidents like this previously.

I will wait until I see further action before I make any further comment.

trashing a bar, throwing tables, lighting fire in a venue. that's pretty despicable. it doesn't matter if the media is anti anything. that's despicable behaviour no matter.

Surely that sort of behaviour would lead to arrests would it not?

Re: How easy to use QFF points - A tale from an Infrequent Flyer

Not if the miscreants aren't caught/identified.

Re: How easy to use QFF points - A tale from an Infrequent Flyer

Jack3193, my father would have always said 'you need to learn what the 'jesting' (not the 'malicious') use of chiacking is.

If you come from Ireland, it's humorous to call you a 'leprechaun.'

Increasingly in Oz, no one is able to make any sort of mildly controversial comment without being pulled up by the minority of Australians who are bleeding 'left liberal' hearts (whose compassion always has strict limits with the multiple rules of the politically correct intellectual elite).

It's obviously simpler and safer to suggest that the Qantas CEO has made some poor decisions.

You'll find that non-racists are not just left leaning in their views. What I also observe is that people who name call about politically correct and bleeding hearts, don't have the first clue about the topic and generally are talking absolute rubbish. ...

There are a number of notable examples of these people in these parts.

You're sounding very left leaning bleeding heart and politically correct in that comment. It's just a bit of fun, letting off steam after the game.

Actaully, by accounts it was a planned ambush before the game!

Oh well friendly caicking warm up before the game. All in good fun. same same. No problem except for those who don't understand the joke. The left leaning bleeding heart PC brigade need to lighten up and get a sense of humour.

a public brawl, furniture thrown, glasses smashed and four people suffering injuries. That's not acceptable behaviour on the streets.

Do we see that at the cricket? Or golf? Or Aussie Rules? At the swimming?

Refer to my comments. It's all in good fun, you just need to lighten up and stop being politically correct.

Leaving aside the fact that Medhead's comments are obviously in jest, and the fact that this is completely OT .... Just to point out that you don't see this happening at the soccer either - this incident happened on Bourke St and seems to have involved a handful of people.

Sadly, there will be many more violent incidents in Melbourne CBD tonight, and at least some of them are likely to involve people who were drinking all day at the cricket. However, the media won't report those incidents as cricket fans causing trouble - in fact they most likely won't report them at all.

I regularly attend AFL, soccer and cricket - I've seen fights at AFL and cricket (in both cases between people supporting the same team!), but not at the soccer. That's not to say there is no misbehaviour from soccer fans in Australia - in fact there was a lot of stupid and irresponsible behaviour from the WSW fans tonight (flares etc). However, it's just laughable that a lot of people think the A-League is some kind of hotbed of violence, as that simply isn't true.

Fights at the cricket and Aussie rules - yes you do. Do you see the same level of reporting, most definitely not.

I will do some digging when I get the chance, but I do have an article somewhere comparing a HAL game that was supposedly violent, yet on the same day, there were more issues and arrests at the cricket yet it was hardly reported. It was from a couple of years ago so hopefully I can find it.

I am not taking away from the severity of what may have happened in Melbourne, but to suggest that this only occurs in soccer is blatantly incorrect.

OH! i didn't know! (I've never been to a sporting event except the tennis so wasn't aware it was so widespread.) Can't people just go out and have a day without fighting?

Re: How easy to use QFF points - A tale from an Infrequent Flyer

Although slightly OT I believe an appropriate resolution would be a game of cricket (no fighting without gloves) between a Qantas CEO XI and a Virgin CEO XI. Of course it would have to be played at a neutral ground, serviced neither by Oneworld nor by Star Alliance. Catering by Neil Perry - drinks by Virgin? OMG would we ever reach agreement on the terms?

Believe it or not, there has been more violence at the Aussie open tennis in recent years than at A-League soccer matches.

Tennis isn't seen as much of a threat to the Melbourne media's beloved AFL though, so they don't seem to go on about that so much.

Re: How easy to use QFF points - A tale from an Infrequent Flyer

Maybe it's different in Adelaide but we've never had the street violence for AFL that we can get with Soccer. And that has nothing to do with the way it's reported.

Not convinced, I'm afraid. I personally witnessed a stand off between Adelaide and Melbourne Victory fans in Adelaide, which amounted to nothing more than chanting from either side of a line of policemen. According to the Adelaide media, that was a "riot". By the way, the fight I witnessed at the cricket was at Adelaide Oval on Australia Day a few years back, and it was a proper brawl involving a fairly large group of people, but I never saw any mention of that in the media.

There is no doubt that violence used to be a particular problem at soccer in Australia, but since the disbandment of the old NSL (which was made up largely of teams associated with different ethnic groups), that has ceased to be the case. The problem now, IMHO, is simply that many people haven't realised that things completely changed with the introduction of the A-League almost 10 years back. There are very few crowd problems either inside or outside A-League grounds, but everything that does happen is hyped up beyond belief.

The sad fact is, there is quite a lot of violence in our cities - including Adelaide - resulting in loads of arrests and numerous injuries every weekend, and even some fatalities. Those incidents will inevitably involve people who happen to be fans of one or more sports, and in many cases people who happen to have attended a sporting event earlier that day. I guarantee you some of the young men who end up in the police stations and hospitals of Adelaide every weekend are AFL fans, but the media do not report those incidents as AFL fans causing trouble.

Re: How easy to use QFF points - A tale from an Infrequent Flyer

The media has a long standing interest in AFL, NRL and Cricket. Just imagine if these sports were held to the same scrutiny as Football is?
Their would be a few journalists who would find out they wouldn't get their accreditation renewed if they were too negative against AFL. NRL or Cricket.
I always look for articles the day after a day/nighter and you tend to find the a small article on pg 2 reporting x number of arrests were made, x number thrown out for drunkenness.

Re: How easy to use QFF points - A tale from an Infrequent Flyer

I also have to mention a number of venues in Melbourne during AFL season will not let supporters in, wearing their team's colours. I asked one bouncer why the ban and he said too fights between supporters.

AFL and NRL are Football. If you're referring to soccer being held up to extra scrutiny then perhaps it is because they use higher profile weapons such as flares etc during their street riots?
