Heading up to Burundi.

A fairly typical bridge.

It was quite a few years ago, so sorry for not providing more information, if it wasn't for the photos, I'd probably be flat out remembering anything!

Onwards and upward, gorillas in Zaire, as it was then. First we had to walk through a tea plantation, we were lucky we saw gorillas within a short period, some groups had been out there for hours without seeing a thing. Again I wonder how many gorillas and their handlers survived the various conflicts over the last 27 years.

Before we got to the gorillas, we climbed Mount Nyiragongo which errupted in 2002 causing quite a lot of damage.

Eastern Zaire (as it was then), very rich farming country, this was a former Belgian farm where we camped.

Mambasa in Zaire and Butembo. Both places of severe fighting in later years.

On the way to Epulu, yes this is/was a major road.

Epulu, as in another thread we spent a couple of days there at the park which was run by a couple from Europe. The others went off on a side trip to spend overnight in a pygmy village, I mean while, had caught some dreaded lurgy and stayed behind. Some of these photos are from the boss.

Epulu was a mess during the wars and is only now rebuilding. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okapi_Wildlife_Reserve

They caught a Dik Dik using these nets for dinner.

Typical bridges in that part of the world, one a "Baileys", one not and one broken.

These were all taken near Kisangani in the then Zaire, anyone here read "A Bend in the River" by V.S. Naipual https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Bend_in_the_River

Some of us wanted to catch the river ferry down to Lisala, but unfortunately as it was "Africa" it wasn't running at that time.

Various fishing shots from the Congo River.

More river shots, typical ferry, normally you would have to pay plus give them fuel and sometimes let them use your battery to start the engine.

Village chief.

For us it was a chance to have a wash and a swim, for the locals however, it's all part of their daily life.

Various people shots, even though we were using 'film' and not 'digital' cameras, there was the expense as well shortage of film, it wasn't exactly encouraged to take a lot of photos, in particular anything that may be seen as military/police activity. Some locals also didn't like having us taking to photos at all, as one person said "when you get home and show them to your friends, you will all laugh and call us savages".
Zaire at the time was still under the clutches of Mobutu, even though a lot of people lived in poverty, he was one of the richest people in the world. (sound familiar?)

Overland trip from Nairobi to Spain with Guerba, It took about 5 months from end January till end June in 1989, and I met the boss on the trip as well.

Kenya, Tanzania,Burundi, Zaire, Central African Republic, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Algeria, Morocco, ending in Grenada.

The boss had previously done a similar trip from London to Cairo and then down to Cape Town in 1984, this took over 6 months, although the drive from London to Athens took a few weeks, not fast going in one of those Bedford trucks!

Thankyou, my wanderlust has never left, still many places left to visit, I've seen a lot over the years and honestly I have no regrets, except that I didn't take a camera when I did my first couple of trips, I always thought, no problem, you'll remember everything!

Love the photos and when I get home will go through mine.Unfortunately all my pics from my 69 trip to PNG and the solomons were stolen. Some were amazing.
But do have China in the early 80s.

I'd love to see those, I found one of my China guide books during a cleanup, think things may have changed a bit! Photos like these?
