Reason given to cancel churned credit card

I always just state that I have too many credit cards, and need to consolidate. Keeps the door open for retention bonus point offers.

It has never occurred to me to call to do a cancellation. I always write a letter. Never had any of them contact me to try to rescind that.

I've always cancelled by phone, but it's probably faster to cancel by post (I've never thought of that :))

I love the phone calls to cancel cards - amazing what offers can come back your way with 'free' pts to keep card open - accept them - transfer them - then call back and cancel in a month - it's all a game - and you are playing with banks don't forget - always mildly therapeutical to get a win over them.

It's also worth mentioning, AMEX-specific have a service called secure-messaging.
You'll find it through searching their help section while logged in. (I think they're starting to hide it)
I've successfully cancelled three AMEX cards in the past 12 months through writing a firm cancellation message through this.
It certainly beats arguing with someone on the phone for 20/30 mins! ;)

I'm not sure many on here always want to close their accounts, rather looking for easy retention offers especially I have noticed with AMEX. Ringing up I've managed to pick up 90k MR points over the last three years, maybe could have done better cancelling and applying for new cards but actually I quite like the card and happy to keep it

I'd be surprised if they accept that, they won't even let you change your address details via bank mail.

I've always thought companies should be focused to accept cancellations via the same channel they offer consumers to signup.

Every time I've done the maths its never been worth taking any of their offers. Much better to cancel the card and move straight onto the next offer. it is, of course, better to do this as soon as possible in order to wait out any 12 month or similar exclusion period that may apply to the same card.

My bank mail message to NAB seems to have been ignored. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

mine wasn't ignored....

So while ANZ accept secure messages, NAB don't

I received a similar response from the Cth bank when I used their online message system to cancel my card. I sent a reply referring them to my first message and reminding them that my account was now closed and that I wouldn't be responding further.

I just spent 25 minutes on a phone call, but it is done now.

The Westpac signup bonus is showing on my first statement :) so as soon as they make it to my QF account it will be their turn

With the exception of some AMEX issued cards, in my case, I can't think of too many cards that are worth keeping beyond the first year - unless they are offering a truly brilliant retention bonus.

Agree, the main reason for calling is that you might wish to receive an "offer". When you really want to close the account a letter works well.
