Just before travelling to the USA this year I joined three excellent Clubs for a modest fee
They all had a good network of Clubs in the cities I visited.
The clubs in question didn't require an existing member to nominate me.
The Royal Scots Club in Edinburgh and The Royal Overseas league in Australia
In Melbourne the The Bentleigh Club have a number of Reciprocal clubs but you need to use google to get a list.
One of them was the Capital Hill Club in Washington.
I stayed at the Standard Club in Chicago which was marvelous .
It was an easy train ride from ORD that didn't require any change of train, the subway at Jackson Blue was a two minute walk from the Club.
The clubs in New York were superb and within a block of each other .
They were a haven of tranquility from another era and very welcoming.

Well done 1963 - can you share how modest is modest. And how did their accommodation costs stack up in comparison to hotels? I am a user of a couple of clubs also, all Naval/Military related - Union Jack Club in Waterloo, Marines Club in Portsmouth, and the Mariner's Club in Hong Kong. As you say, almost like little oasis' in the desert at times.

I have been a member of The Royal Over Seas Club for a long while. The cost of membership is merely $30.00 annually. Worth every dollar whether your travel is domestic or overseas. Within Australia you can use reciprocal interstate clubs.

Here's link to its reciprocal clubs:
