I always take out travel insurance, did have the need to go to hospital in Barga, Italy once but the language barrier was the biggest issue.
From a medical perspective one of the biggest benefits of an active TI policy is that if you have need of medical assistance that it is so much easier as:
- You contact the TI's healthline and they then recommend who you go and see, whether that be a Doctor, Dentist, Hospital or other
- That way you get treatment without a language barrier, or at least where it is good as it can be
- You get treatment of a suitable quality. Whereas if you try and arrange it yourself this can be problematic. Especially in "third world" or "off the beaten track locations".
- Getting re-imbursed is so much simpler as effectively the TI has pre-approved things
- They give good advice and so your medical care starts more quickly
- The number will normally be 24/7, and so no need to wait till say the next day if you try and manage your care all by yourself
