Reciprocal Health Care Agreement

I always take out travel insurance, did have the need to go to hospital in Barga, Italy once but the language barrier was the biggest issue.

From a medical perspective one of the biggest benefits of an active TI policy is that if you have need of medical assistance that it is so much easier as:
  • You contact the TI's healthline and they then recommend who you go and see, whether that be a Doctor, Dentist, Hospital or other
  • That way you get treatment without a language barrier, or at least where it is good as it can be
  • You get treatment of a suitable quality. Whereas if you try and arrange it yourself this can be problematic. Especially in "third world" or "off the beaten track locations".
  • Getting re-imbursed is so much simpler as effectively the TI has pre-approved things
  • They give good advice and so your medical care starts more quickly
  • The number will normally be 24/7, and so no need to wait till say the next day if you try and manage your care all by yourself

My Amex credit card insurance (not a separate policy, the inbuilt one), doesn't exclude Covid any more. They have put out a policy addendum explicitly stating the rules about Covid claims. It's worth double checking this with your own credit card / insurer, as I believe it's now the norm not to totally exclude Covid under the general pandemic clause, but to have special Covid related clauses.

Good advice.

Unfortunately for me, I checked with Allianz yesterday, and still no Covid coverage with their Westpac or St George card complimentary insurance. I leave for Europe next Thursday so will have to top up with an additional policy that includes covid within the unlimited medical coverage. Southern cross seems the best value, that’s likely where I’ll end up. I wish Allianz would ‘get with the program’!

Most will cover you medically if you or someone in your group gets covid (ie hospital / cancellation / rebooking costs if you get covid).

What they're not covering is government action - ie closed borders etc.

(I'm sure you know that, just putting it here for others who may not)

Just wanting to remind you all that there is a separate thread for travel insurance. This thread is about a RECIPROCAL HEALTH CARE agreement.

Yes, but the context was having to rely on reciprocal health care agreements due to being unable to get travel insurance that covers covid.

Please report posts if you feel they are off topic. I'm pretty confident the moderators would rule the posts as relevant to the discussion.

I realise the comments diverged when one poster thought the OP had no travel insurance, although that is not the case. The OP did want anyone's experience with reciprocal health care. However I couldn't say the latest posts are off topic because they continue from a previous answer / comment.

Along with Battymum, I am still interested in hearing anyone's experience with reciprocal health care overseas.
