Hi forum

I'm travelling to New York on 6th January next year for 7 nights. As I haven't been to NYC in something like 10 years - and the last time I went was on more of a budget, I was hoping for a recommendation on a hotel.

I'm not really keen to stay in Times Square area as I like to get away frmo the touristy areas if possible - more prefer a character neighbourhood like Greenwich Village/West Village. I'm looking to spend no more than 250 USD per night including taxes. After all I'm mostly going to be out - shopping, enjoying the nightlife and not really spending much time at the hotel.

So far I have made a tentative booking through booking.com at the Four Points Sheraton Soho Village - it's a pay later deal and was heavily discounted to 1700 USD for 7 nights including all taxes. I'm just not sure about the location. Has anyone had experience with this hotel or if not, does anyone have a recommendation around that price range?

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated :)

We've always enjoyed Grand Hyatt at Grand Central Station - easy access everywhere from there.

Have a friend that just came back from Soho, she loved it. Not sure about the hotel. What does tripadvisor say?

I can recommend the Pearl just off Broadway. We stayed there 3 or 4 years ago - the week it opened. I think my TA report was the first one.

How have you found it? Reports on FlyerTalk suggest it's overpriced with numerous problems.

Not the times i've stayed there (although admittedly it's been ~ 2 years since last visit).

What are the "numerous problems" as we never had any??

This is now several years old, but two different friends of mine stayed at the Four Points SoHo and raved about it. When I wanted to go, prices where through the roof there so stayed at Four Points mid-town.

I'll flesh my last answer out a bit more now I have time!

I find the lobby dark but the staff were always attentive. There's an executive floor. We had a corporate rate at ~ $220/nt (USD).
They added a while ago a kind-of "quick breakfast" shop in the lobby in lieu of room service / exec floor.

We always found the staff attentive (in a NYC kind-of way) but it's a big hotel and i can see how some would find the experience a bit "cold" in terms of staff recognition (imagine the numbers of people passing in and out).

But NYC isnt about the hotel - it's about being out and about, and being located at Grand Central is great from that aspect. Subway or taxi rides are easy to anywhere not within walking distance.

I am not familiar with the hotel itself but the location is fine. I stayed not far from there on a previous and enjoyed it - away from the crowds of Soho but just walk across 6th Ave and you're in the thick of it.

The only thing you might want to consider is that the closest subway is the 1 line...and that's it. Given the weather will be cold, you might want to be closer to a few lines rather than the one. You do have the A, C & E a short walk away but you might not want to walk that bit further if the weather is poor.

A midtown hotel that I stayed at and enjoyed was the Blakely. The street was really quiet but really handy for Central Park, a multitude of subway lines and the Broadway theatres.

I will be arriving in NYC on the 10th Jan but I am not planning to book a hotel until later. I am going to wait for all the January deals.

Just got back from the US this morning. Was in NYC for 10 nights as part of the trip staying at The James in Soho. Very nice boutique hotel on Grand & Thompson St so is an awesome location. The Trump Soho is just around the corner but costs more $$$ although plenty of celebs hangout there if that's your thing! :)

From memory: noise (from outside and other rooms; small and overcrowded executive lounge where kids run riot; dated rooms; slow lifts; hot-cold-hot-cold showers.

Didn't notice these (although the lounge was crowded on weekend mornings).

I like staying at the W Union Square however checking the prices for your dates it is slightly a bit more than what you would like to pay for it.

However it might be worth a try on Cheap & Discount Travel Deals, Flights & Hotels | Hotwire.com for last minute cheap hotels (you do not know the hotel until you pay for it) but refer to Priceline and Hotwire Forum to "identify" the mystery hotel by comparing the amenities listed on HW against BB.

Thanks everyone for your replies - some really good information here and a lot of places for me to check out.

I check out The James - beautiful hotel but very expensive. For the seven nights the rooms are coming in on booking.com at 2600 USD (371 per night) so definitely more than I am looking to spend this time.

I've booked the Four Points Soho but will also keep looking. The beauty about booking.com is that most can be booked and confirmed with no deposit and free cancellation.

If anyone know of other good sites to check I'd be interested to know.

Hi All

Heading back to NYC in Feb 2014 and looked also at Four Points by Sheraton SoHo, but also looking at Hilton New York Fashion District. Has anyone stayed here? Property was apparently renovated in 2011 after being rebranded by Hilton and location in Chelsea (152 West 26 St) appears good for subway connections around Manhattan.

I really like the Hilton Fashion District. The location is central, the furnishings are modern and you can get to and from your room quickly unlike the huge hotels. The room size is modest but you can find some good deals (particularly with AAA discount) and Sunday nights are always good value.

Thanks QF029. We have gone ahead and booked with Hilton Fashion District.
