Recommendations for USA Sim Card with Data

This is what I received from Vodafone when I switched my iPhone on in the USA last week:

"... Welcome to The USA.

Warning, now that you have activated your mobile device overseas, there may be delays in receiving usage information and alerts.

The good news is you can now use your Australian plan while you're here. This means for just $5 extra a day you can make calls to standard numbers, send TXT, or use the internet - all from your regular plan allowance.

This Vodafone offer is automatically activated each day you send/receive calls, use your data, or send a TXT/PXT. For more info or to opt out, free call +61414141414 from your Vodafone Mobile.

Don't forget you now need to dial +61 instead of 0 when calling Aussie numbers.

Happy travels!....."

So, only when you make/receive calls or text or start using data, not when phone is idle with Data Roaming switched off.
Ahh great to know thank you for updating me. My (apparently very wrong ;)) sources said it was upon network registration.

Good to know though thank you =)

At $5 per day plus using your allowances I would still use local sim.

You still have international (Aus) number and the person standing next to you in say the US will still have to make an international call to call you.

$5 per day = $60 in 12 days so if you are there for less than 2 weeks it might be worth it but only if you are on Vodafail(phone)

Using one now at LAS ...

Can't call Oz mobile phones without topping up but landlines are fine.

After turning 'phone on approx. 6am LAX time it took about 130 minutes to fully activate.

I'm going to Hawaii for a week and a half in February. Just saw this deal on OzBargain, 30 days unlimited T-Mobile for A$40 (with free SIM delivery and pre-activation for your arrival day). Just looking for data while over there (at least 2GB). Can anyone point out any better deals for what I want?

..

A good deal i used this for the same price in the new year ... see post #46.

I think reviews of various websites will give you honest buying experience and I always use reviews in finding any shops. When I was in 6 week tour in the Hawaii, I was in need of a prepaid sim card. I searched reviews on google plus and I found some good reviews. Before I left I purchased a prepaid US Sim Card from TCAWireless.

There are many stores providing sim cards you can get while you are in Hawaii. Just to let you know I used TCAWireless, got it all sorted before I left, and they were great. I got unlimited plans with international calling and texting. I hope this will help.

I have not read through the entire thread, so I am not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but my preference for a sim card when travelling in T-Mobile coverage areas in the US is the T-Mobile $30, 100 minutes, 5 Gb data pre-paid plan that you can only sign up for online. What I have discovered is that you can order a sim starter pack from amazon or some other online retailer, get it sent to you in Australia and activate the service in Australia before you leave. That way you can have internets before you even step off the plane.
