American-Express-Velocity-Platinum-Card-Art-2024.pngWhy we like the American Express Explorer credit card

The American Express Velocity Platinum Credit Card is one of the highest Velocity Points-earning cards in the Australian market.

Not only this, but you receive a complimentary annual return Virgin Australia flight and unlimited Virgin Australia Lounge access whenever you fly Virgin within Australia! You also get two single-entry Virgin Australia Lounge passes each year to share with friends or family travelling with you. These benefits more than offset the $440 annual fee, which is less than the cost of an outright Virgin Australia Lounge membership.

This card can also help you to achieve a higher Virgin Australia status tier, by rewarding you with up to 100 bonus Velocity status credits each year. You'll get 50 bonus status credits when you spend $25,000 on your card within a year, and another 50 if you spend $50,000.

I wonder how many people who have the Amex Platinum Velocity card are already Gold or Platinum with Virgin?
A fair % I reckon so Amex are not giving anything to lots of current users and taking away Centurion access from them and increasing the price by over 17%.
Thanks Amex
The people who got easy status and crowded out the lounges will be replaced by new credit card holders in the continuing crowded out lounges

Crazy that it's cheaper to take out an amex with comp flight + lounge membership included than an actual lounge membership direct with VA.
To be fair the VA lounge membership is $450 and provides access to VA lounges with one guest (+2 children) both same day before and up to 60 mins after Virgin Australia domestic flights.

This Amex card is $440 and comes with lounge access for the cardholder only 2 hours prior to departure. No guests and no arrival access.

Generally, what's the availability of the comp flights with little (say 1 week's) notice, probably just between syd and bne or adl.

It’s linked to the some of the cheapest fare types so unlikely at 1 weeks notice and less then reward space.

50SC added to my VFF account on 05/11, for 25K spend

My partner received 50SC on 5/11 also.
They were due to hit the $50k in about 6 weeks so we were about to turn on family pooling in about 2 weeks to get the 100 SC polled into my velocity account.

If Amex have changed this without officially notifying of the change of terms/benefits to existing cardholders I wonder how hard it would be to get that reversed and then reapplied at the same time as the next 50 SC when the $50k spend is hit, so I get the full 100SC as planned.

I suspect it will be impossible to get a resolution on that :(

Referral links still go to the explorer card.
Been waiting to refer someone, now that it's got lounge access for every single VA flight I can see it potentially being more attractive for some people who were on the fence.

Any insight as to whether there will be a forced change from the free 'Escape' to the annual fee 'Escape Plus'? I can't see anything on the site, and card services is still showing the pure red card image rather than the newer purple tinged card.

Seems like a downgrade... Correct me if I am wrong...
Depends.

Increased annual fee - that's bad.
Full lounge access - that's good.
No Centurion lounge - that's bad.
All other benefits remain the same - that's good.

Imma call it a draw.
