American-Express-Velocity-Platinum-Card-Art-2024.pngWhy we like the American Express Velocity Platinum credit card

The American Express Velocity Platinum Credit Card is one of the highest Velocity Points-earning cards in the Australian market.

Not only this, but you receive a complimentary annual return Virgin Australia flight and unlimited Virgin Australia Lounge access whenever you fly Virgin within Australia! You also get two single-entry Virgin Australia Lounge passes each year to share with friends or family travelling with you. These benefits more than offset the $440 annual fee, which is less than the cost of an outright Virgin Australia Lounge membership.

This card can also help you to achieve a higher Virgin Australia status tier, by rewarding you with up to 100 bonus Velocity status credits each year. You'll get 50 bonus status credits when you spend $25,000 on your card within a year, and another 50 if you spend $50,000.

If I cancel this card, which I’m highly likely to be doing anyway, can I sign up for the equivalent QF Amex card and get bonus points, or because it’s an Amex issued card, I commence the 18 month exclusion period?

Visited the BNE lounge this morning with a guest. The lounge manager said she knew of the new Amex benefit but hadn’t seen anyone use it yet, and she wasn’t sure how to give me entry.

But one of her colleagues knew, and they let me and my guest in (not sure if a guest pass was used or not, I still have two in my account).

Off topic, the security situation at BNE is shambolic, and that’s putting it lightly.
Any other experiences like this? With a family, this card is near useless with it being for a solo entry into the lounge, but if they treat it like a virgin lounge membership and let guests and children it would be very useful (although I suspect this is not the case). Would have been especially useful since they are seeming to crack down on kids allowance with the Air Canada gold status recently (I know kids are guests, but had typically been let in previously - well did under Kris flyer gold at least).

You'd need to sit out the exclusion period.

Completely agree.
No guests this perk is not ideal to many.
Me included.

Why not include just 1 guest, I mean most ppl have a partner.

If you don't have status the you don't fly often & this +1 wouldn't be used too often anyway.

Curiously would you pay $200 more annually for an extra guest benefit?

The way I see it the card is half the price of a lounge membership, a couple of lounge passes then the credit on top. At its currently price if they removed the credit and 2x passes then it’s the same price as a lounge membership.

good point re price.

re paying 2hunj more for an annual guest pass you ask?
I'd say if I wasn't a reg flyer & didn't have status I'd prob fly maybe 2-4 times a year & the guest pass for $200 would be equivalent in paying the $65 per entry so even stevens.
Throw in the x2 lounge passes included then no I wouldn't pay the $200 for guest benefit.

But then kids aren't guested in free with this card owner benefit, that makes it inconvenient for families.

good point re price.
The new velocity status requirement I’ll never reach but I intend to lock in platinum this year and next through to July 2026, I’ll soft drop to gold valid through to July 2027 and then I’ll consider this card. It’s basically a single person velocity membership with a credit and a couple of lounge passes thrown in, anyone looking at it another way including those with velocity status clearly doesn’t see the value. That being said from later in the year you’ll need a velocity earning card to earn 5 points per $1 otherwise it’ll drop to 4 points per $1.

Same as yourself, have WP status & Gold till 2027 & with the dropped AMEX lounge passes, I don't see any benefit of this card, increased AF, little to no value for me.
Paid the 2nd AF & used the freebie flight.
Holding for at least 12months keeps me some good stead in amex black book for re-applying in couple years.

I noticed some discussion on Reddit about AMEX card holders being rejected from VA lounges during busy periods, which led me to read the applicable T&Cs, which do indeed indicate that the level of priority for card holders is relatively low:

(b) Access to the Lounge and its services and facilities is subject to availability, and may be unavailable, restricted, limited or withdrawn at any time for capacity or operational reasons. During peak periods or when the Lounge is at or nearing capacity, priority will be given to Guests travelling in Business class, Lounge Members, Velocity Gold Members and Velocity Platinum Members with same day, onward travel on an Eligible Flight. Access for Single Entry, Eligible Partner Credit Card Holders, Eligible Partner Airline Status Member and complimentary or additional Guests may be restricted during these periods.

Something to be mindful of if you're considering this card as an alternative to a paid lounge membership.

I've used the lounge access benefit a couple of times since it was introduced, and whilst I had no problem getting in, it was slightly coughbersome that on both instances the lounge staff had to ask me to read out my Velocity number, then scan my boarding pass. I'm surprised that their systems don't link the two.

Two hour time limit and no guests unless you use your two passes.
Bit of a Claytons lounge membership.

Off topic, but for anyone interested, last night when I went to the Amex site they were offering me 120K velocity points with the disclaimer about it being a personalised offer and may not be there when I return. Confirmed same offer in place today (Thu). Waiting for mortgage refinancing to clear this week before applying, so hopefully this hangs around :-). Chrome browser on Android if you're wondering.
