Refund of Qantas FF points after cancellation

I had some flights booked using QFF points - I've decided to cancel the booked flights and rebook as my preferred route is now available - but I am taking a risk by needing the points from the original booking back before I can rebook (I wasn't able to rebook online) - any idea how long it is likely to take before the points are available to allow me to rebook (I'm crossing my fingers I haven't screwed myself here too!).

Thanks in advance.

Can you change your existing booking instead? If you can't do it online, service fee should be waived, you'll still have to pay change fee though

I am currently in week five of waiting for a booking to be refunded, with more than 200k points owing.
So YMMV.

Data point - cancelled all QF award to USA on 28 July. Points credited 29 July. Now waiting for taxes.

Ring up.

I did a cancellation of some seats on a partner airline recently. Cash component was returned within a day or two, But for the 300k points nothing happened for 3 weeks. Rang up at this point and it turned out the reimbursement of the points were "stuck in the system".

Phone agents were able to "fix" whatever the problem was and the points were back within an hour.

I’ve already made two calls - the first about a week after, as the taxes/charges had not been refunded my cc, and neither had the points. After the second call funds arrived a day or two later, still waiting on the points.

call again, use the frequent flyer services option not reservations. Say that you need a priority points refund in order to make another urgent booking

Agree with the above. I had to cancel and rebook for some flights that just got released. Rang up and told agent I needed the points back urgently for another booking. Points refunded within 1-2 hours. Taxes took longer, about 1-2 weeks to come back to my credit card.

I think I was really lucky - took 3 hours and I was able to rebook and get everything I wanted, and got great value too, saved 5.5k for 280k points (plus the 20k cancellation fee). 12 flights for that (4 of us going). I am a happy boy!

For what it’s worth, I did call and follow up again, going through the exact same process as I did for the other two.
Didn’t mention an emergency booking, only that it was my third follow up. The agent sorted it while on the phone.

My mother-in-law decided not to join us on a trip to Bali next April (part of a longer multi-centre jaunt but standalone ticket). Cancelled yesterday afternoon and points (less 6000) in my account this morning.

You could have waited for a potential schedule change?

The cash component came back the next day too. Surprised but good

I booked a Qf classic award long weekend from Syd to Bhq for next June ....soon after I changed my mind, and booked to go elsewhere....2 weeks ago there was a schedule change by 40 mins, and I was allowed to cancel for free without the 6000 Qf x2 pt cancellation fee for 2 of us. Points back almost immediately and $$ within a day or 2.
