Regain status OR one world classic award?

Really?? But then a $1200 BFOD is hardly likely to include 5 stopovers, lay-flat beds, lounge access etc the OP would experience flying J. A better comparison would have been the 280k points + roughly $1500 such a J award would cost.

The OP's post is weighing up two options: (a) buy a regular BFOD economy fare and possibly maintain silver or (b) splash out and use accumulated points on a OneWorld Classic award and not maintain silver.

Your third option ((c) spend $6-7K on a business class RTW fare) is an order of magnitude different from (a) and (b) in terms of cash outlay.

OP, definitely go with (b). You won't regret it.

I achieved Gold in July for first time ever, my original plan was to leverage a Finnair RTW business class sale to retain gold.

But since July there has been severe reduction in work travel (did not fly in August at all), so when I saw I could get J Classic Reward flights (SYD-HKG-DXB-CPH + HEL-DOH-SIN-SYD) on dates I needed I opted to burn my points and forgo the opportunity to retain gold.

Need to wait until there is more work travel to ensure I can get gold again in a future year. And in my thinking better to take a real J reward, than save points when pretty certain would lose status by a lot.

I think if i knew id get close to retaining status I would have spent more to keep it.

YES, will go with b! Thanks so much for stopping my head spinning......You've confirmed it for me! (I'm reformed, no longer hanging on to points when I can use them. As someone else said, they are not going to 'gain in value
