Reggie starting to fly DJ

The Lounge T&Cs say you can guest pax free (assuming your a lounge member) then each additional guest pays $35.... Your guest does not have to be flying with Virgin Blue.... BUT I have noticed at both the SYD and MEL lounges that they are not allowing guests during the renovations... In some cases they have this noted on a small sign near the door :(

It may be worth asking, if the lounge isn't too busy...

PER-SYD-CBR

Thank goodness for priority checkin / bag drop. the queses were huge, I got many an evil stare for going through priority and getting served faster. (almost no wait, which is better than I have experienced with QF, where priority bag drop or checkin queues are generally long.)

Lounge was good, no problem in getting Mrs Reggie and Master Reggie in to see me off. Master Reggie is still less than 2 years old - just. Wondering what will happened when he is older than 2 years, paying the $35, for him to have some cheese and Ham seems a little excessive.

Note to DJ, any chance of the rules allowing Gold members traveling PE or J to have 2 guests, 1 for the seat, 1 for the gold/lounge membership and 1 as part of the lounge benefits? Only being able to get one guest in will severely limit my ability to fly DJ, as there is no way my Mrs will want to be left outside whilst me and my son sit in The Lounge. I am sure that QF still allow WP's to bring in 2 guests.

Flight was good, live to air was already set to free for the PE's. Water, headsets and clod nine packs on seat waiting for me.

Asked to watch the movie "The Kings Speech" and no problems.

When the service came around I asked about the pie I had so much about, but was told sorry we don't have that on this flight:shock:, however we do have the vegetable fritata, and that is our only hot meal. I was again dismayed at this as the flight leaves PER at 0900WST (1200EDST) and arrives in SYD at 1315 WST (1615 EDST) which covers lunch in both ports. This is an improvement on the last PER-SYD DJ flight departing at the same time that had no hot meals, but if the pie is no available on a 4 & 1/4 hour flight when is it?

Went to the SYD DJ Lounge, and thought I would have a drink at the bar, and found The Lounge do not serve spirits. Mmm wasn't aware of this either.

So lack of anything of a hot food nature other than the vegetable fritata and no spirits in the lounge, versus the saving of $700 on the one way flights. Good for my company, maybe they will shout me a small bottle of spirits to carry with me.

Hmm. Yes, see this is what keeps me off Virgin for now. Like any reasonable person, I'm not trying to say I'd prefer to pay $700 for a hot pie, but thats not really the question. I'm sure DJ could have a few bottles of refreshment in the lounge and a hot something (non vegetarian) available for less than 700$ per pax. I don't think the money is the issue, for either DJ or the pax, its a subtle hint to me from a distance that they have not quite got a grip yet on what full service is all about.

In my mind its like the difference between a 4 star and a 5 star hotel. You might well argue that for a dollar saving of 200/night or more that the free bottle of water and daily newspaper you receive in the 5 star is just not worth the money, but its more then that, its not dropping the ball on any aspect of the service and having a consistent high grade product without obvious holes in it - this is how I look at it anyway.

Full points to DJ however for the distance they have covered so far though. I've been monitoring this thread with a lot of interest. Things seem to be on the improve.

Keep in mind, that even on QF, the 9 am flight from Perth to Sydney is classified as a breakfast flight, so you would be getting a Qantas breakfast. That does not get you the same choices of hot meals that a lunch or dinner flight gets.

The pie itself is on flights greater than two hours departing after 11am.

I am not sure that DJ have said they are going to be what people think of as a full service airline. They have said they are seeking a portion of the corporate market and developing a product set to get that - that does not however mean they will be providing exactly what Qantas does.

I would hope that in the future, even if a meal is extra, they have a way of bundling a meal into the price of a fare at time of booking though.

In my experience, the more stars a hotel is, the more likely you are to be nickel and dimed over minor things. In any case, both four and five star hotels have their place.

Yep, sure. Its been a while since I took an early (<9am) flight as I hate rushing about in the morning. Last time I did though I seem to remember getting a sausage or something warm, not just cereal or hot toast or something.

In any event, I realise these types of things are quite subjective. Food of all things :) We all have our preferences and no airline can run an a la carte restaurant in the galley.

Still, I suspect it wouldn't take a lot of polling to find that the target audience has some specific food and drink types in mind. Providing any food at all is where the major cost lies. The difference to the airline in providing pies rather than, or better, _in conjunction with_ vegetable fruitata's would be so minimal as to not even show on the balance sheet.

Sure. I implied that in my response though I didn't really mean to make a strong statement in relation to DJ's revamped offerings. I stated the obvious, 'its not full service' and wrongly implied that this is where they are heading.

DJ looks to be trying to gain some corporate market share by providing options outside of their traditional LCC model. If they do no more then that I think it will work for them in modern times as more and more corporates seem to be dropping J class for Y in relation to employee travel. It may become easier to convince the Boss/travel department to stump up for a good solid Y+ type of experience rather than full service J as we've come to know it in the past. Perhaps this is where DJ is really going? A J- experience perhaps rather than a Y+?

I would hope that in the future, even if a meal is extra, they have a way of bundling a meal into the price of a fare at time of booking though.

Agreed. Not only do I hate the slow ramping of cost through nickel and diming I just get tired of always reaching into my pocket. I'd prefer to state what I want up front, pay, and have my experience rolled out to me.

Heh :)

I understand what you mean about top end hotels. I find that very annoying I must say that nowadays even without thinking much about it I tend to make choices from amongst higher end hotels which generally use an 'all inclusive' approach to their customers. As I said above, its not really even about the money, though I am conscious of spend as most of us are. Its really about continually reaching into my pocket time after time after time.

Incidently, its been a while since I went to a non all inclusive resort. Chosen with care, all inclusives can see you happily leave your wallet and cards in the room safe and wander about having a sterling time.

You are quite right, all classes of hotel have their place, as do classes of seats and provisions of service on airlines.

Its not clear to me though, yet, what DJ is up to. Are they trying to tempt existing J customers away from QF? Is so, then the Y+ or J- experience might not be enough to do that. If, instead, they are trying to extract more business (ie; money) from existing customers, or from previously loyal QF Y pax by offering the J- experience at a really competitive price point then they may do extremely well.

Good point regarding the breakfast, I had to go and check this. However my QF breakfast flights do have a cooked meal of bacon / sausage, eggs and there is still a choice, but granted not as many as the lunch and dinner.

Also please note there was NO hot option at all on my PER-SYD flight 3 weeks ago.

The pie itself is on flights greater than two hours departing after 11am.

I found this out when having a closer look at the menu on the SYD-CBR flight, but you beat me to the correction.

I am not saying they have to be the same, or that they have said they are going to be the same, I am merely providing a comparison between my experiences for others here, and they and myself can make our own decisions on whats important and whats not. YMMV

I would hope that in the future, even if a meal is extra, they have a way of bundling a meal into the price of a fare at time of booking though.

They do, its called PE:)

I have travelled a number of times with MRS Mac and the 3 little macs (13,11,9 YO) and have used the lounge and never payed for the kids..... With the oldest one at 14 and eating like a horse, I am not sure how long this will last, but great value... But they have never stopped me taking the whole family in......

Well, we are on the same page here. I hate having to put my hand in my pocket every time I do something..

So, when I fly trans-con - give me luggage, give me a hot meal and a drink or two, some sort of entertainment and all is good. And if these are optional extras, let me pay up front for them.

Its not clear to me though, yet, what DJ is up to. Are they trying to tempt existing J customers away from QF? Is so, then the Y+ or J- experience might not be enough to do that. I am not sure either, and I agree they have a way to go before they get me across on an ongoing basis.

Egg? So that was what that yellow vulcanised stuff was :p

They do, its called PE:)

Ok - they need to do it for their less flexible fare options as well :D

Catching up on my flights

SYD-CBR was also very good, row 2 again, which i have found to be far better than row 1. No entertainment. Offered water on boarding. Ordered and recived softdrink and potato chips (expensive for a 50 gram bag), supplied without issue.

Even though a very short flight offered another service and specifically asked if I wanted the "limited editon" ice cream biscuit thingy - whihc I declined.

Off the plane quickly, and bags one of the first off with all the bags marked domestic connection coming of first.

CBR-MEL

Flight delayed due to incoming flight delays. Lounge was great in CBR, was large and not many people in there even though there was a SYD and MEL flight leaving within short succession.

Flight was turned around very fast, and we got going very quickly. Pilot made up time for us to land on time, only to be slowed due to the Melbourne runway works.

Flight itself, other than the free offer of food and drink there was no special treatment of Y+. No paper, no water bottle waiting or offered for takeoff.

THE LOUNGE - MEL,

As we are all aware the lounge is under going rebuilding. However even though cramped it was very good. They won me over with my weakness of SAMBOY BBQ CHIPS. OMG:shock:, they had SAMBOY's:D, there goes all the good work over the past year.:(

Anyway, they also had pleanty of extra goodies that I haven't seen in the other lounges, in terms of nougat, chocolates, chips etc, but that may be due to timing as well.

Lounge did have lots of dirty plates and glasses laying around for a while, then all of a sudden there were three people cleaning and tidying and it was spotless in a few minutes.

I still hate that the Ole' Gold Wing Lounge is outside of the security areas, but, hey if they haven't moved the points now, I don't thing they ever will.

MEL-PER,

I left the lounge early so as not to get held up at the security gate, and to try and avoid delays due to the explosive testing ;)

When I got to the gate, there was already a very long line waiting to board even though it hadn't yet been called, so I stood back and pondered how the priority boarding was going to work. I had noticed in the past they call it then immediately start boarding as normal and I didn't want to wait this time.

When assisted and priority boarding was called, I followed a little old lady to the left of the gate where she was given assistance, and I was eyed up by the gate attendant and asked if I was priority to which I replies in the affirmative, she took my boarding pass an ushered me in. I could feel the glares burning through my back, but hey I was on my way.

I have done a lot of premium flying (F & J) with different airlines, and this flight was one of the best in terms of service and attention from the FA's. When I boarded, paper, water bottle, and travel pack were waiting for me, only thing missing was the head set. They were unable to find me a Y+ head set so I had to do with the standard ones.

I ordered the pie, and it was great, I wouldn't pay $8 for it at a deli or lunch bar, but hey try buying one at an airport, or trying buying one from somewhere else on the plane. The CSM was very apologetic that it took them a long time to come back and clear away, but she said they were really busy with lots of pax ordering food.

For the rest of the trip I had all he FA's coming by and asking if I wanted anything else. If only I was younger and not so scared of Mrs Reggie, one of the FA's had these eyes ......... but I digress.

Anyway, like I said above, this is one of the best flghts I have taken in terms of service.

I was first off the plane, but my bags were 10th last, 7th last and 3rd last off, plus my Pelican cases were still wet, and my suit case was damp from where they had sat uncovered in the rain at MEL (was able to see the trolleys of bags sitting there getting wet due to rain from the lounge windows).
