Re: The totally off-topic thread

People can believe what ever they like but a lot of science is fact....

Well, not quite. :) True scientific principle does not say things are 'facts' (or even alternative facts:) ). Unlike medieval superstition, scientific principles say that the current peer reviewed accepted percept or theory is the best explanation we have of a phenomenon at the present time that allows us to predict future behaviour and explain past events. It's the best humans can do, rationally.

I was taught that you can only ever disprove something, but anyway. You can present a pretty likely scenario. And I'd say evolution is pretty darn likely.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Of course they are entitled to whatever strange views they wish, but not when they promote unscientific and frankly demonstratively wrong views in a public forum. Such views and comments must be countered and fought and not simply let go, otherwise it's to the detriment of us all and society in general.
Oh dear is all I'll say to that comment.

Tolerance and you are not always right regardless of what you think.

i support Johns thought here although twill elaborate

Tolerance IMHO is when those with status drive the life force that turns the tide so that "a rising tide lifts all boats"
so things like tolerance, inclusiveness Making people feel excluded — that's not an Australian value - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation). A helping hand not a handout.... spending less than you earn to free up cash to pay for all those good airfares ... chuckles so on so forth

But that's not simple given the craving for "getting to the top", being Lord Overall (or in my case Capt, which is pure escapism and humour. Of bringing it down to earth. Can you hear the background thud? ..) because after all, who doesn't like a bit of status ?!?

Even the forgotten get a vote on Election Day, but that wasn't always the case, and of course we all know the "Tall Poppy syndrome" alive and well in Australia, which is designed to force all Australians to be tolerant and down to earth....

There was this interesting article on status
Status anxiety: At work as much as in life Worth a read

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I really think that we need to let people have their beliefs and those things that nourish them in life even when we disagree. We can say we disagree but not on an individual level, just keep it general.

My belief - Mother Nature has it over all of us. There is some kind of logic going on but I don't have the intellect/ knowledge to interpret it.

I'm getting old and rambling.
Some have the knowledge to interpret. The rest of us can only speculate.

Let's leave religion out. Evolution is given way too much credit. Single cell organisms could not possibly create the complex structure you see in a human body. They could not possibly create the hundreds and thousands of species we have around us today. There is structure all around us. The blueprint of life is there.

The other thing that makes me wonder is the universe is 14 billion years old, the earth is 4.5 billion years old yet recorded human history is only 6,000 years old.

I am old. I am rambling.

This amazing thing called DNA is the blueprint for life, and contains all the instructions to build all of the species that exist and have existed.

I'm sorry you feel that way but you're wrong. Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean that it didn't happen and doesn't happen. You keep saying that we (humans) don't understand DNA when we actually have a pretty darn good handle on how it works. In fact that understanding of DNA is why you have a daughter right now. Science is pretty amazing hey. Without science that wouldn't have even been a possibility. But go ahead, keep trashing the people that allowed you to start a family.

I am not sure where the 6,000 years comes from as even in Australia recorded history is much older than that. Mungo Man and Mungo Lady were from about 42,000 years ago for example.

But if your point is why did it take so long for humans to appear in the whole scheme of things, then that is simple: evolution takes a long time.

Oh yes. This thing called DNA just appeared out of nowhere with random instructions on how to build hundreds and thousands of species? Yep. Very believable. The blueprint of life was just a random accident.

Sorry I don't buy it. We were created. I have no doubt. I love the progress human beings have made in identifying and understanding DNA. What arrogant human scientists don't quite understand is the closer they get to solving the DNA puzzle the closer they get to their Creator.

I wonder if the robots will think the same way as you in a few thousand years. Robots were not created. Robots evolved.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

JohnK. You keep using the word 'random' and all your post above shows that shows you do not understand the thing you are arguing against. As I said above take some education and then make an argument.

And its not a 'few thousand years', but a billion years or more of evolution. Time is very difficult to comprehend, but you can get a lot done in a million years, let alone a billion or so.

I usually recommend Stephen Jay Goulds 'Times arrow, times cycle' as a good, easy to follow read on geological time. Do look it up.

Maintain your beliefs for sure, but don't stay will fully ignorant about the scientific basis for evolution and earth history.

I missed this. <redacted>

Tell me me this JohnK. How many years ago does your belief tell you Creation occurred? You naysay the scientific figures, but never put up your own.

So when did God create the heaven and the earth? Nearest 1000 years ago will do.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

But that's the problem. It's just mirth and humour you are spreading, not knowledge. While as I believe you work in IT which relies on rationality, quantum theory and practice to function, not medieval alchemy, how unfortunate that you are not prepared to learn even a modicum of science to counter and enlighten medieval thinking.

Such 'beliefs' are dangerous for society and leads to things like the anti-vac campaign, denial of climate change and much more. May as well join the Senator from Qld on the crusade trail.
You left one line out.

"In your opinion"

I'm sorry you feel that way but you're wrong. Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean that it didn't happen and doesn't happen. John didn't trash any people he simply stated that he has another opinion.

I see a common theme here of people who have strong opinions but are totally intolerant of the opinions of others.

Please remember that this is a discussion for everyone and everyone is entitled to an opinion even if individuals do not agree with that opinion.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

..............
So when did God create the heaven and the earth?

This is what I was taught in Sunday School ........ but that was a L O N G time ago

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form .....

Geez even the Pope acknowledges the existence of Evolution.

Sorry, the one being arrogant here is you. The arrogance that your unfounded belief trumps hundreds of years of the scientific process.
