Rental Car USA

I thought as much. I've got ANZ platinum but it's vague enough that for $12 a day it's not worth the risk... Much rather part with $150 or so than worry about what happens if I run up the back of some high end car on the highway.

I've said it before, reading the fine print (by a lawyer) reveals you really don't have much insurance regardless of paying and taking up all the options in the US. You are at the whim of the rental company and its contract supplier of insurance.

Going to use Argus. A lot simpler and cleaner, everything organised in one go and at a decent price.

Have used Alamo many times, never had problems and found the complete opposite to your friend. They even replaced a vehicle after I did some under car damage and knocked out an engine mount out the back of Utah - no charge. I think you friend is wrong on Alamo.

Matt
I used to use Alamo but then had a couple of the friends type experience so dont any more.

damn, argus still doesn't show what car company its from, even at the credit card details page.....

And just curious, they charge you a full tank of fuel at whatever the price they want to, because you should return it as empty as possible? and that is paid at the counter not at the time of booking therefore the prices look cheap? would be a total rip off if you were renting for a day with not much driving? - or am i missing something here.....

With my Argus hires you get a free fuel tank of gas and you are to return the car empty. It is just a question of whether to select Gold or Platinum package in their site.
when you turn up at the selected car rental site the agent will try to up sell you into a higher priced car, a GPS and higher insurance all of which you should decline unless you want your pocket lightened.

but you dont get to find out which company you are booking with till you have booked it right? and it could be a dud company if booking for us travel isnt it? and the free tank of fuel, that is only in oz is that right? because in the t and c when booking in for the states, it says you gotta turn up and pay for a full tank of fuel and any unused is not refunded.....

The free tank of gas has been in California each time for us. We have ended up with Dollar,National Alamo and a couple of others and it is no problem in Los Angeles using Argus and getting the trawled hire car company bus to their depot.
I have done this for the last 3 years and for hires running for a week or a month.
Just do not allow the sales agent to up sell you at the counter...do all your choices on line. I met a young high pressure sales agent who was getting a big slice of the upsell.
Take the insurance in the Platinum or Gold package ....it would be false economy to cut out insurance in America and if there is a claim against you if you don't defend yourself in the US then the US claimant can register their judgement in Australia.

thanks m8, coz i have never heard of this website, and some of its prices, e.g. mustang vert is much much cheaper than elsewhere i could find, made me doubt the site and become weary of hidden fees other than what is advertised. It also appears to have the insurance included? with no excess? but i must read into it more as it seems too good to be true to be included without additional cost.

Anyone having trouble with the argus website? no matter what i search, i get no hits for the states. It was working fine for me with plenty of selections 2 days ago. Maybe i need to find another computer to try.....

What happened to novacarhire.com recommendations?
I've used them and all inclusive.
Good english phone support.
I notice they have just updated their WEBSITE.....

This is the best site I have found for car rentals

carrentals.co.uk

It lists all the companies mentioned in the above threads as well as more. Very easy to use.

give it a try. I cancelled my argus rental after comparing with the ones available.

Cheers
