Rental Cars.
There should only be one rule when picking up a rental car and that is to go over it with a fine tooth comb and if you find any scratches, dents or anything at all get the hire company to go over it with you and record the damage and sign it off. Be sure to check under the front around the skirts and the back of the mirrors. I have been caught a couple of times and especially check cars overseas as I have accused a couple of the Hire companies of trying to make a business out of the damage as by there reaction when I have bought a car back they have known about the damage before I arrived to drop the vehicle off.

So true; you really do need to have a careful look; even check for cleanliness and a street directory if appropriate.

Also check to ensure the fuel guage is showing full.

Where do you draw the line? I once was charged an extra $110 for a flat spare tyre! For that rental I never opened the boot. Needless to say I was able to get the charge reimbursed.
