Hi there everyone

Quick question.

I recently attained gold status but in doing so earned above the 500 required (an excess of 15 status credits).
(I was on 495 when I flew my last flight which was worth 20 SC)

I understand that these status credits won't show up on my account page since they were earned before my review date. But do they actually not count towards retaining status?

Thank you in advance.

Hmm, I can't 100% remember now, but I didn't think that VA status credits reset to zero upon first reaching gold. I'm 99.9% sure that they only drop off 12 months from the time they are earned.

From your post, I'd expect to see 515 SC ...unless of course one of the original SC's earned and they have now expired??? Is that possible? The thing is, you need to keep gaining these things once you get past 500 as you launch yourself towards Plat.

I do seem to remember my account going a bit wobbly at the time I first received gold - there were other upgrades and general troubles on the velocity website at the time though so I just assumed it would work itself out and it did, after a few weeks.

I'd say give it a week or so (if you haven't already), see if its worked its way through and if not then give the gold line a call :)

The short answer is no I'm afraid - if the number of Status Credits earned to retain Gold shows as 0 when you log in, you're going to need 400 Status Credits instead of 385.

I had success in maximising the value of my Status Credits due to the failure of Virgin America to credit things properly, but I suspect that's a rare case.

No they don't unfortunately. I'm not too happy about this either as I retained my gold from last year & earned another 90 SC's on top of that. But it won't count towards retaining gold again as it was before my review date. Virgin should look into this because it seems like a total waste to me as I'm never going to make platinum.

The 15 SCs over the 500 won't count to requal but will count towards the 1000 you need to earn plat. I think losing only 15 SCs like this is a good result. Have seen family members on 480-490 SCs and their next flight being a 160SC international flight meaning they effectively lose 140-150SC benefit towards requal. In these situations you need to be smart with your family pooling and juggle it in a way where it is most efficient so you dont overshoot the mark by too much by offloading status to family members, having them pool back a smaller amount etc.

However if the flight consists of 4 sectors would this be treated as 4 individual credits ?

I E is each sector credited and status assessed or after the whole flight?

Thank you everyone, very helpful and good to know for future planning!

Each sector is credited individually, however the Status Review process occurs daily. For example, if you have 480 Status Credits, earn 2 lots of 20 Status Credits (say MEL-SYD-BNE in Full Fare Economy) in a single day, you'll be assessed as Gold and have a balance of 520 Status Credits, but will still need to earn 400 additional Status Credits to retain Gold. With all that said, you'll only need to earn an additional 480 Status Credits to get to Platinum.

The only thing I've been able to do to maximise Status Credit effectiveness is scrutinise the order things are awarded in and contact Velocity when things aren't done properly.
