Yes, there are trains in India that have people that ride along the side. But the train I was on was more like a bullet train. It wasn't quite as fast as the Shinkansen but did go 130km/h at the peak. And some food was included.

These are called Vande Bharat and are a series of trains introduced under the Modi government as form of "modernising" Indian Rail. They look fancy but have actually caused a bit of trouble across the rail network as these Vande Bharat services are more expensive services and are gradually replacing many cheaper General/Sleeper class trains that were more affordable for the poor population.
 
I am a bit late to your TR, but I really enjoyed reading it. Mr Seat 0A has been to Mumbai and surrounds for work, but I have never been to India. It looks really interesting.
