They are the flights I saw on the app but when I try booking using classic rewards I'm getting an error every time. Confusing. Awaiting a call back now.

Assuming I am able to book them on the phone, will they then charge me? For the privilege of phoning them I mean?
That’s what I posted earlier. There is a known problem with online booking of multi search award flights and you have to call them up. Free service to book. You may have grabbed the inventory.

Thanks will let you know how I go.

Fingers and toes all crossed!

I would try and argue against them cgargin

a bit worse than that, as I did a point to point search I.e Jnb-Syd and there was no availability. However hopefully a phonecall will sort it out at no charge.

After speaking with Qantas I'm not filled with much hope that this is going to work out!

The agent said that they could see no award seats on any of the flights (including through Dubai or HK) from the last weekend of September onwards however he mentioned that the flight on the 12th which is the one we want is not busy.

He said to keep checking all the time but is it likely that seats will be released? When I checked the return flights originally there were always plenty outbound and inbound right up to the release day so I (stupidly perhaps) assumed getting back would not be an issue. I've had to book things in RSA due to it being a busy time so cancelling is not really an option.

Hopefully I get lucky and some seats are released. You live and learn.

I never book awards overseas for myself, but I have done a few for family and friends and I have always been a bit paranoid and booked them quite literally the second they were released. You might get lucky, but I think the school holiday period might be at play here. Fingers crossed that something comes up for you.

That was my plan and what I've been doing every day but yep, school holidays may end up costing me a fair bit more than I budgeted for!

Thanks for your help anyway.

Just an idea. I am going to East Africa September next year coming back on the 5th October and I can’t book that yet, as Emirates dates only go to the 21 September 2018. I am looking a paid flights, not award. I want to go via Dubai, as I want to fly Emirates. It seems to be different to Qantas’ dates. If I look at the route via the Qantas website, it also can’t find flights back on that day (which is what you would expect). So it is quite possible that in a few weeks when Emirates dates catch up, you might find some awards coming back via Dubai?

Or tomorrow if coming back on the 15th is OK with you as only up to 14th now and 15th the littlies are back at school.

That makes sense because the dates that were showing not much availability the other week now have a lot more which is mostly EK flights. EK means a bit of fine tuning the schedule and more points but would save me a significant amount.

That would be fine I think. I have an extra night held in Kruger on the chance that we might have to take a later flight.

Let us know how you go :). Just talking about flights to Africa is causing me to suffer Safari withdrawal symptoms....

Didnt you say you were able to see them and just not book them? I agree though, Award seats are a total luck thing.

EK releases their awards quite some time after Qantas releases their metal awards. Check on the EK site to get an idea of when their seats are released - I think its at least a month different. They also release them in batches of a few days and not on a day by day basis. I monitored all the time last week when doing our EK award flights. I checked at 8am Vic time and they were not out. I checked again at 9,30 am and they were released and bookable but I had to call to book due to the website issue. This was on a Friday.

I could see the paid and points + pay flights but nothing when searching classic rewards.

I will def do that. I'm in the habit of checking a few times a day so if something is released I should - touch wood- get it.

I will do. This will be our first trip anywhere in Africa and the family took some convincing!
they will love it - the game reserves are amazing everywhere in Africa and just be sensible if you are spending any time in Joburg. Africans have this incredible joy in life in spite of how hard it can be for them.

Nah, never use points and pay. Good luck! :)
