Rex Administration - implications for Virgin Australia

Hard to say, but they might have to shut the whole thing down, ala Ansett.

It's a bit of history repeating itself. The Saab (and then metroliner) services operated by Kendall and Hazelton, only ceased for a short period before resuming under the oversight of the Korda Mentha ( the administators), and then eventually sold to investors, who formed Rex.

Likewise with Aeropelican which emerged from AN as a separate company (who were merged with Brindabella who then went bankrupt, but some former staff resurrected it as FlyPelican using former Aeropelican aircraft) and Skywest (who went to VA eventually as VARA).

What happened to the Metrochild 21? Does anyone still operate it? I remember flying to TGN on it once and hated the lack of toilet on board!

In Australia, according to Wikipedia, Sharp still operate a fleet of 15 metroliners.

And Skippers still have some as well:

Has VA raised prices already? I was looking SYD-BNE for November, and noticed everything is really expensive, around $200-$300 for choice one way.

They've got $99 choice fares on sale for pretty much all of November, except 7th-10th.

The Rex mid-week promo prices are still available for now too.

Those are the exact dates I'm after but glad I managed to book one-way for around $95... Wonder why those dates are so popular?

Yeh those are the exact dates that I need to go, what gives 🤣

I'm VFF silver and have done the SYD-MEL return trip every week for 6 weeks or so. Prior to the Rex administration, I've always been allocated a seat which has had a spare seat next to me, mostly rows 10 or 11 and even a couple of upgrades to Economy X seats. My last two flights have been at or near capacity and I've been allocated rows in the 20's. I could do seat selection but no seats available further up. Maybe the Rex flyers using their tickets.

VFF silver status up until T-48 can only select from row 11 back.
Gold 10-7 & WP row 6 and ecoX.

Hope that's clear and helps a little.

Hope at the least that VA might offer the Rex 737 staff a job, seeing they are taking back/over the leases of the 737.
Still, has to be said, ZL should have just kept with what they do best, ie, regional flights, that dont pinge/impinge on Link/VA/QF/JQ flights routings.

Thanks makes sense - I was more commenting that I was frequently getting row 11 before the Rex administration and am now much further back as it seems loads have increased. I’ve got a booking for next week at the moment it’s allocated row 19 but will see at T-48 whether I can select a better seat.

Looks like the ex-SQ, Jet and GOL aircraft has had their registration holders changed from REX to "De Lore and Associates" (Brisbane-based repo company that did work for VA 1.0, Bonza and various freighter companies), so it's starting to firm on the 14 year old ex VA1.0 (RQP/REX/PAG) returning home to VA 2.0 at this stage.

The nearly 21-year old RQC and 21 year old RYU are tipped to join the already scrapped RQG in the boneyard.

The MEL-SYD sector of my flight this week was quite a bit more expensive than usual. I was able to get costs down by taking a later evening flight. Overall, my return flight was still about $100 more expensive than has been typical over the past several weeks.

According to the VA website:
The window for rebooking ended on Wednesday, 14 August 2024.
More than 100,000 impacted Rex customers have now been rebooked free of charge onto our services.

Yea I fly SYD-MEL-SYD every week. Flights are chockas now. Hard to get fly ahead as a Platinum when I was pretty much able to do it no problems at all for exact flight I wanted prior to REX going under. I.e. today MEL-SYD the 3pm, 3:30pm, 4:15pm, 4:30pm and 5pm were all 100% loads. Could have been the case on others too.

Last week I booked a bunch of $99 "Choice" flights between Sydney and Melbourne for January, February, March and April next year. So at this stage I'm not noticing any rise in pricing!
I usually book that route about 2-3 weeks out, not seeing any of the $90 happy hour choice fares anymore which I think was a price match to REX. Just booked tonight for 3 weeks time, $110 each way on choice is still fine though.
