Rex in voluntary administration, ending all 737 services

Q300 does the trick
Again, it is too big - almost double the seats.
If you have flown on the Saabs on a typical Rex route, they are often half full sometimes less. But because they are inexpensive to run, it is still profitable (well on a govt subsidised route)

Like for like would be the Dash8-100 but production stopped nearly 20 years ago

And again frequency is important.
It's not an easy solution.

Crock.

Running costs of the Q300, parts and pilots availability … the SAAB has had its day.

no, none of the other small operators have a solution either
And only the 328eco on the horizon, but it's back to a 2027 at best entry.

++

For Rex 737 ticket holders.
No refunds.

An agreement has been reached with Virgin Australia to honour all prepaid tickets for the Rex Group’ direct services between domestic capital cities, at no additional cost to passengers.

If you hold a prepaid ticket for future travel on any of these routes, you can transfer your Rex booking to a similar Virgin Australia flight.

To rebook your travel, contact the Virgin Australia Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89 or visit www.virginaustralia.com by Wednesday 14 August 2024.

I wonder what the terms are that VA agreed to uplift the ZL passengers? For example if you were paid ZL business does this map to VA business?

Also warning to all VA pax expect some difficulty getting through to the guest contact centre for the next few days as all rebooking needs to be done via phone.

Link above also suggests the website.. probably worth waiting a few days to let things settle.

Now what to do if VA doesn't have the right flight times (had a Rex flight booked as a placeholder return from the AFL grand final) - VAs last available flight MEL to SYD showing with seats is 6pm that night. Surely they have to add more.

I wonder too. Although given at best there was only ever 1-2 paid pax in business, there won’t be too many. And the fares are the same on ZL as VA.

Would something similar to Jetstream 32 would work? FlyPelican still flies them

Yet to be seen as the VA website hasn't been updated yet. That being said hardly anyone was buying ZL business class most were bid/free upgrades. I had a look at SYD-BNE this Sunday on ZL J and just one seat on the 5 flights was showing as occupied. I know that's a bad example being a Sunday but there won't be a lot.

Edit Yep :
  • Subject to space available (standby availability), Virgin Australia will offer an Eligible Rex Customer an Economy class seat on a Virgin Australia operated flight, to a port where Virgin Australia operates that matches the customer’s original destination with Rex. Customers with a Rex business class booking will be accommodated in a Business Class seat where available or otherwise will be offered an Economy class seat.

Yeh this is actually going to have a larger impact for VA pax instead with fuller flight, harder to fly forward, harder to get a last minute ticket etc. Obviously Bain/VA thought it was worth it for the goodwill and there probably wasn't a huge number of forward sales in the grand scheme of things.

The fact that it is already after school holiday helps a lot. I am sure that there are some spare capacity in VA for the next few weeks. If the ZL flight is on very busy time, VA may simply offer the value that the customer already paid to ZL, and they would have to pay the gap to VA to on those high price tickets at busy times.

Customer must hold a current booking with Rex for a flight on an overlapping route that has a service operated by Virgin Australia (Eligible Rex Customer).

Virgin Australia will determine, in its sole discretion, whether a customer is an Eligible Rex Customer and whether space is available on a Virgin Australia operated flight for the Eligible Rex Customer.

Feel sorry for those travelling tomorrow, and the crew displaced in Adelaide tonight.

John Sharp’s close party ally and friend Bridget McKenzie, who happens to be the shadow transport minister, has started the attacks on QF, likely on behalf of Sharp, as expected:

The so called supporters of capitalism need to respect our free market that is the Australian domestic aviation industry and respect the will of the Australian people in that overall they do not wish to fly Rex.

Virgin have announced they will be taking over the lease of 3x ZL 737
Wonder if some or all of the ZL 737 cabin crew and pilots come with that deal (for many possibly returning their employment to VA).

Regional Express Holdings Limited (Administrators Appointed) 2018 ACN 099 547 270
I guess this also means any regional fares purchased from now onwards are "safe".

Virgin Australia is also offering support to Rex employees who may be impacted by today’s announcement. People whose employment has been affected should visit the expression of interest form on our website to apply for open positions.

Recognising the importance for regional Australians to have access to a comprehensive domestic and international network, Virgin Australia also intends to partner with Rex’s regional business to enable seamless access to Virgin Australia’s domestic and international destinations through potential codeshare or interline arrangements in the future.
