Rex in voluntary administration, ending all 737 services

The airport can probably keep billing for the gate without needing to do any work. OK there might not be any money left but if there is then it could be a cash win for the airport. The gate might also be locked in to unexpired REX contract which is in place until the Administrator says otherwise.
Aren't the REX gates common user gates? Don't think they're on long term lease unlike the QF and VA leased gates in the capital cities.

Dramatic much? Do we really need the use of concrete blocks?
Maybe there is a market for someone to create a clamp for plane tyres? haha

I'd have gone out of my way to fly Rex, if they'd bought Airbus's instead of the Boeings..

A missed opportunity for a better flying experience, on modern aircraft, instead of the agricultural Boeings, for sure.

They didn't buy anything. They just took an opportunity to pick up the ex-Virgin planes at cheap lease rates.

The Rex ops keeps QF and VA honest on the jet routes and without doubt fares would rise if they were to go - have they done a terrible job of marketing etc of course, but as consumers I wouldn’t be celebrating a return to the cosy duopoly.

Regional flying has always been marginal especially to small markets hence government support for some markets - however those flights are a lifeline for those communities.
Yes, sad day for pax. With their online connex regional flts, should have done better. Pan Am had same prob . Few Dom flts but deregulation killed them. They (REX) were better for service etc. Had to fly VA to CBR and all I got included in fare was half a cup of warm water in waxed cup.

I just got an emailed e-ticket from VA with my replacement REX flight. Exact same time and date as the REX original and business class was honoured too. Thanks VA!

It took them longer than the stated 72 hours to turn around the web form request, but travel is still a week away and just SYD-MEL so I wasn't too stressed. They sent an email at about the 72 hour mark to say things were taking a bit longer than expected and they're prioritising re-accomodation by imminence of travel.

It’s going to be interesting to watch pricing here. Historically between 2007-2020 we had Tiger on Domestic Ops, nearly 20 aircraft, and now Rex 2020-2024 who got to nearly half that. That’s a lot of seats pulled out of the market, permanently. Then we have the reduced capacity from less widebody ops across transcon.

It’s going to be much more expensive booking peak periods on the capital runs. My advice would be book well ahead.

Hopefully things like Western Sydney and extra capacity from the A321, 737-10 coming in will keep pricing in check.

Well, it seems that John Sharp, et al, are screwing up the VA call centre.

I tried to contact VA by phone this morning to cancel a booking (as a Platinum) and was told that the wait time was at least 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, I gave up. Prior to this I've never had to wait more than a minute or two.

I really don't think that VA should allow this Rex business to stuff up their normal business as it seems to be doing. But I guess they see potential $$$ in it, so to hell with current customers.

In this case beggars can't be choosers. Isn't it more or less a Publicity move?

I wonder if someone gets to jump the queue if they were VA2 WP with a ZL ticket>

Email received from Rexflyer administrators. They are prophesying that Rexflyer will live...

Hi Pineapple,

By way of introduction, I’m Sam Freeman, and alongside Justin Walsh, Adam Nikitins, and our team, we were appointed last Tuesday evening at 9.30pm as Voluntary Administrators of Rex Group.

Since being appointed, our focus has been working to ensure Rex’s regional services continue through – and beyond – Rex’s Voluntary Administration, and today I wanted to provide you with an important update on your Rex Flyer membership.

While we had to make the difficult but important call to cancel services between capital cities on our Boeing 737 jets, I am proud to say that Rex continues to service regional Australia through the Rex Saab 340 fleet.

I’m pleased to let you know that during the period of the voluntary administration, Rex Flyers will continue to be able to enjoy the normal benefits you receive under your membership tier.

You’ll also be able to continue to earn Rex Points as usual, including bonus point earn amounts for tiered members.

These points will be redeemable only in the event of a successful restructure of Rex that specifically seeks to maintain these points, and while we can’t guarantee the outcome of this process, it is our current expectation that such a restructure is the likely way forward for Rex.

While we recognize you likely want more certainty around how and when you can use the points you’ve accrued, I want you to know that your patience and understanding while Rex undergoes this process, is directly helping to set the airline up for future success.

As a Rex Flyer member, you are a vital part of Rex’s future. We are counting on your support as we map the long-term prospects for Australia’s biggest regional airline.

We are focused on getting Rex through administration and securing a future for the airline and will continue to update you as the administration progresses.

“Rex Flyer” has not taken off and will not take off. It will almost certainly be submerged into Velocity considering how cosy Rex have been with VA in the past week (even though it’s VA that shot Rex out due to their shared customer base of value/leisure/budget oriented travellers, not QF who have a premium/corporate customer base, which made Rex incredibly vulnerable)

This will lead to three regional airlines using Velocity. Pelican, Link and now Rex.

It’s strange that airlines that Virgin don’t have a stake in have adopted/are adopting Velocity while airlines that Qantas actually has a stake in (Alliance) don’t adopt QFF.

Not really. Apart from the Adelaide to Olympic Dam route, they barely have a network of scheduled flights, so what value would Alliance actually add? I'm sure that one flight a week from Brisbane to Weipa would do wonders for QFF...

There's also a Sunshine Coast to Emerald route operated by an Alliance Airlines F100/F70 that's open to regular RPT once a week during the FIFO season (it's a charter on the two other days it operates).

Apart from that, not sure if QQ's extremely limited RPT services would be of use to QFFs.
