I’m still not seeing justification there for the government to purchase and run an airline. It’s a minuscule number of routes that could easily be picked up by decent operators. If they elect not to, the government can subsidize and put it to tender.
Rex should be left to fail. Once other operators are finished picking up anything valuable remaining, the rest of the gap can be covered by government tender for essential services.
Election year. Can't rock the boat in regional by saying we're gonna let rex sink even if it's the financially correct move. Politically it'd probably be a bloodbath.

The election will be called within weeks. Easy enough to string it along until after the election.

Pretty much the same thing they're doing with the VA/QR decision.

Am I the only one that loathes ATR's? Boarding from the back and having a front row with no exit is incredibly claustraphobic... I almost flipped out when I got in my first one and was give row 1... Yes back rows are where you need to be - but something about the design feels like a lack of interior space compared with the light and airy cabin of the Dash-8's...
I agree, not sure what it is exactly but I went on a few recently in French Polynesia, sat mid cabin but it definitely felt more cramped and dark than the Dash 8.

I've only been on one ATR (maybe 2, but can't remember if I flew on an AN one).

Last year, I flew an NZ ATR-72 AKL-TRG (45 min flight) and found it ti no worse than a Dash-8. However, I did work out to select a seat near the back...

Ansett never had any ATR. They had Fokkers

I suspect it’s mainly the medicos and those rural folk here who may understand quite how pivotal Rex is in certain areas to the delivery of life saving medical services, and likely other infrastructure and non medical services too. “Let it collapse and then figure out the rest” is not possible. People will literally die because of that, but many more would be significantly negatively affected.
