I heard them fly over the Gold Coast, but was at home so couldn’t see them. Considering they look so good in formation like that it’s a shame they don’t do formation flying more often.

They do lots of formation flying but mainly on pairs or form 4s.
Also be aware that this 20 a/c formation would have cost around $2M.

Yeah I figured cost would be an issue, but buy a few less bombs and do an event like this once a year (or two) and people will be happy.

the cost question is an interesting one in my opinion
unless these planes are usually mothballed and not used, the additional cost of having them flying in formation along the gold coast vs flying touch and goes or whatever other training exercises they do is minimal
If they are usually mothballed, why do we buy them in the first place?

A similar thing I recall was the outrage from the public at the cost to the Australian Navy of rescuing injured round the world yachtsmen

either the navy goes and rescues someone or they eat the same amount of food and consume the same amount of food and boot laces hunting for a sonar buoy or whatever training exercise they do

No disagreement other than there is a lot more training value to be had doing other things than simply flying around in a 20 ship formation.

The squadrons have a set flying hours allocation and have a bunch of training requirements to complete in those hours.

I had thought that such events would be funded through a RAAF or Government slush fund, rather than as a direct cost to "training" hours.

Should have delayed it a few days and made it a 'welcome to Brisbane' flyover for the queen...
