Riddle me this, how to get to Sth America via VA partners?

Thinking of our next bucket list trip and I decided its Easter Island between Feb and April 2017.

But how do I get to Chile with VA partners?

I could fly LAN or Qantas, Syd>AKL>Santiago in J for approx. $6Kpp (J seats) but we don't have any loyalty to QF and I don't know what I can do with the points afterwards (can I transfer to Hilton ect).

Usually Hubbys idea of trip planning help when I sound ideas off him is to stick cheese in his ears and say la la la but when he saw me on the QF website, he said we fly VA reward seats SYD>LAX then Delta LAX>Atlanta>Santiago. Hubbys thoughts are we will get SCs for the Delata flights to maintain WP and we've not been to Atlanta before so will have a stop over.

So... how do you get to Sth America via VA partners? Any suggestions and thanks,

SQ, EY and SA all fly to GRU. NZ fly to EZE. But none of them will get you to SCL like DL can.

How about NZ SYD-xAKL-PPT, then LAN to IPC? You don't have to go through SCL.

I misread the Op about paying. I almost never buy longhaul tickets and so sometimes I just jump straight into Award Redemption mode...

I would prefer redemption but knowing how difficult they can be to get sometimes, Im budgeting for worse case senario... which is we pay
