I recently purchased a RIMOWA Classic Cabin S (55x40x20=115 total) for myself and a RIMOWA Classic Cabin (55x40x23=118 total) for my partner for a Qantas First trip to LA in July (obvs. A380). Has anyone had any size issues with either of these carry on items in First? Weight will probably be ok but interested to know any stories of a no-go onboard. We may each have a laptop sleeve as well.

As a side issue - any issues with the same on domestic Jetstar?

Thanks!

I use an Antler Clifton cabin bag which is 56x35x23 and fits easily on all mainline QF and JQ aircraft. Technically yours exceed the width dimensions (36 is the limit, yours is 40), but should be no problems.

No issues in QF F as you'll have at least a full locker per seat, and can always fit in sideways. It will fit in JQ A320 as they are stored wheels first, so will just take up slightly more width than the allowed bag.

Your main issue on JQ domestic is weight, your bag probably takes up most of the 7Kg allowance.

Thanks for that! Yes it is wider but would technically fit in Jetstar, just wasn't sure if staff go heavy on you a lot before boarding. Have been weighed frequently by them but never a size fit. I also always purchase Jetstar's 14kg *just in case* I go shopping in my destination. I wasn't sure about Qantas First as it is the first time I've flown with them in First, but good to know, thanks!

I've never seen either airline police dimensions - I remember back in the day they had that basket they could make you put your bag in, I don't even think it's even there anymore.

They definitely police weight (QF not so much) but I think they take the "if it doesn't fit, it's your problem" mindset for dimensions. Obviously if the bag is clearly oversized (ie - it doesn't fit in the security tray) you'll get pulled up well before the gate, but I doubt you'll even notice the extra 4cm.

I have the Rimowa Original Cabin and have taken on numerous QF flights in all travel classes and not had a single issue with it.

Took it on JQ once late last year and again no issues.

As PF says. The biggest issue with Rimowa Cabins is weight. Never been weighed as HLO on QF, but EY and EK have. At F check in, they seem to weigh then ignore.

I’ve never had my hand luggage weighed travelling international business on QF or EK, or even domestic business on QF, so I wouldn worry too much. For sure I have been over weight on a few of those flights. I’d be shocked if they weighed F hand luggage. It’s nice to fly in the premium cabins!

I use Rimowa and have the cabin bag, it has been on QF and many other airlines in all classes of travel and never had an issue. Although the bag is 118cm it fits in those bag measuring/ checking things found at the airports.

I once had an interesting conversation with the check in agent at BNE flying EK F. At check in I was asked asked to put my hand luggage on the scales, conversation went something like this.

Agent - You will have to check this one (my rolly bag) the other is fine (my backpack)
Me - Why
Agent - This bag weighs 9kg and that one weighs 3.
Me - I am allowed to have 14kg.
Agent - It is do with the weight in the overhead storage.
Me - There is no overhead storage in F.
Agent - Where do you put your bag?
Me - On the floor in front of you and there are straps to stop them moving around.
Agent - They didn't tell us that in training.

Then just handed over the boarding pass and said have a nice flight.

I also use Rimowa (not the classic) but one with soft cover every week on 737s and no issues on that or 380 or 330. On 330s it goes in sideways up front but fine to go wheels in on 737s.

Thanks everyone for your feedback - appreciated!

Quick follow on question - would a RIMOWA Classic Cabin S, plus a medium sized briefcase (I am looking at the Maverick & Co's briefcase, or even the Rimowa briefcase) that carries a laptop and toiletries, that slips on the luggage handles and then under a seat, be acceptable on most carriers? Would it be classified as a 2nd small item, or would that be pushing the limit size wise (assuming total weight is fine)?

Whilst we are on the subject of Rimowa does anyone else use the removable compression bit as a guide to folding shirts. When packing I take these out and use then as a guide to fold some clothes as it takes all the guesswork of getting the exact size and keeps things neat.

Yep that’s a personal item. No issues. I travel with my Rimowa and either a large Goyard tote or my B35 on top.

EK and EY generally put paper ‘First’ or ‘Carry on’ tags on the handles.

I assume it’s so gate agents know they’ve been weight checked, but more often than not I tear them off in the lounge as I’ve never had them checked or stopped.

Yes I use the compression pads but I don’t use them for sizing. I have a set of Rimowa packing cubes they are excellent.

I don’t want to fly with an airline that has “hate agents”
