Well you know how they say it is random, and everytime I am screened because I won the random lottery. And when they asked if I have ever done this random screen before I always answer no to avoid the conversation being more awkard
The swab test on dom flights is to test for *omb residue.
But they used to pick 5 pax to do on, how do they know which pax it is that has the positive result, is always what I wanted to know, but never asked... never instigate anything that might hold me up, tho, maybe its the fear in me.
Same as int flights, if its done by sec, its for *omb residue.
If its done by ABF, then the swabs are for drugs.
Officially, its called the "Safety and Security Charge".
You cant avoid paying the safety surcharge or levy in the airline airfare.
All airlines will charge the safety surcharge or levy, and pay that to the security company, its a law in Aus.
Like airport services fee, its everyone pays.
Not sure of the rate, but might be about $3.99/$4, I havent kept track, but its in every airline tix.
Airfares itself, are quite low in Aus, but then when you start adding all the airport fees, and security fees, it all adds up.

For Aus domestic flights, I have had the wand test, and I will repeat *omb residue, the airport security company would probably name it as something else.
For Aus international flights, they (the security companies also do the test), ...
The other wand test, is by ABF on your return to Aus, in the international arrivals zone of our airports.

If you want to argue with the wannabe security officer, who asks you aside, and first question is "and where are off to today", if you are a FIFO mine worker, you can say that.
But dont be so stupid to protest, and say "I know my rights, I am not carry any *omb making items..."
I mean I'm not gonna paying extra premium for an airline ticket for the company's safety rating if they're going to patch their wings with tape. And opt to fly with any random airline that is as safe but not the absolute safest
I've been travelling for 20 years both dom and int carrying cable ties and tape in my carry-on. Never once been questioned. My umbrella has been inspected a few times, though.
I believe I can unequivocally confirm that duct and cloth tape are not allowed.
We use a lot of both in our school robotics programme. Since when we travel out of city we need to carry a lot of equipment on board, we often use tape for securing lids on carry containers and so on once we pass security. But last year we had any rolls we left out for this purpose taken off us.
So I guess we may be restricted to regular Scotch/sell-o- tape or perhaps masking tape, at least on board.
Thought that I had better check on this one before I do it - is airport security likely to get upset about a roll of duct tape in carry on luggage? Have to tape up a box that will be going checked luggage and so want to put the remainder of the roll in my carry on rather than bin it.

I had an elastic travel clothesline - you know the double stranded twisted type with hooks and suction cups on the end. Bought it for my first trip post uni (early 80ās) ā was confiscated at Tullamarine a few years ago by security due to the hooksā¦ Cāest la Vie .. I was surprised but I never argue with anyone that gets between me and my holiday
If you use a quality tape you only need one shot at sealing a cardboard box. I had a lesson on this at a 3M trade show in the US. No need to do multiple shots over and across.
I donāt know about fixing holes on aircraft as that is an engineers role.
Like things that are pointy (screwdrivers, pens, knitting needles), I believe tape actually has an defined criteria about whats allowed or not allowed.
I got pulled up at Sydney airport. The first person wanted to bin my small roll of electrical tape. But the senior guy actually fetched it out of the bin and tested how easy it was to tear and gave it back to me. This was after some guy going to town about losing his bottle of "expensive" perfume.

Hah! There I am heading out of Sydney with a cardboard bike box. I'd been generous with the tape of the bottom of this thing - it was like a layer of plastic coating the bottom! But I knew I'd need to seal the top a little bit after oversize bag drop took a look inside. Security just laughed - zero chance of getting that roll through, as I suspected.
