A final couple of questions before I leave you all in peace -

How many AA miles would it take to upgrade from full economy to business on the Syd to lax ?

I think I'll do the AA platinum challenge as I have Syd-lax-sfo-ord-JFK-lim as the n.american leg of the trip and all on AA flights. By my sums that's around 14k miles which should be enough. As I think I'll be over the 10k by JFK-lim, will I be able to take advantage of the new platinum status at that point?

You can't use AA miles to upgrade between SYD and LAX as AA do not operate flight on that route. They codeshare with Qantas (AA flight numbers on Qantas metal).

The only way with this type of fare is to book QF flight numbers on the QF metal and put your hat in for the 'lottery' using QFF points.
