rumour-upgrade on QF using AA miles.

Now we're talking! I won't be out of the premium cabins for the next couple of years. Bring it on!

Confirmed upgrades at time of request?

Would be interesting to see the details but I cannot see how this is going to work.

Great for AA members - not so much for QF unless you can upgrade AA with QF points as well...

I expect there to be a whole host of teething problems like:

- must have an AA flight number? This requires manipulation of the TA if buying a through fare

- the insistence by AA on reissuing everything with an AA ticket number (001). This seems to create a host of problems and I have really had to push in the past to use my AA miles to upgrade AA segments on a QF ticket (081).

Also, the fact that one uses Sabre and QF uses Amadeus doesn't help. I really can't see this getting off the ground. Plus also AA Exec Plat members have an expectation of getting a free upgrade on every flight. I have been abused ("they are sitting in our seats!" - said to me) when travelling on a paid ticket in AA First.

It is far easier to buy the Instant Upgrade flights on AA then try and worry about upgrades.

But we'll have to wait and see what Tuesday (australian time) next week brings!

I suspect it will have the same restrictions as the upgrades on BA and IB. High-end or full fare classes only.

I hope it is, otherwise this is a ridiculous move.

I know QFi is hurting and probably the pointy end isn't looking too good, but first we give AA most of our premium award seats and now they are going to take away our upgrades el cheapo leaving the QFF upgrade race even tighter than it already is?

Reciprocal rights is pretty useless - AA elite members have carte blanche upgrade rights on domestic AA flights and near that on AA operated international flights (if even any such flights codeshare with QF). I can see many AA elite members breaking down AA's Dallas doors if they get deprived of their upgrades, or selling weapons to the US DoT to shoot AA for taking away their premium seats.

If there was a good reason to literally break AJ's legs and castrate him then this will be one of them I will gladly literally partake in.   How many QFF points for a razor blade at the Qantas FF store?

I just can't see it being confirmed at time of request, otherwise everyone would shift to AA... If this is true I can only imagine they would be added to the T-48 run, and probably the later runs only available to QF upgrades (given the system issues)

My bet is that it will still be cheaper to redeem for a J award than to upgrade...

And how will priorities work:

Chairman
P1
Plat
AAExec Plat
QF Gold
AA Plat
QF Silver
AA Gold

This just has too many unknowns to ever work properly.

I think people are being extremely hopeful.

How do *Alliance upgrade awards work? You don't hear them discussed that often.

My guess is that upgrade inventory is pretty much similar to finding award availability rather than space availability. This is just a guess; most of the T&Cs just say "if a seat is available", which is anyone's guess.

Economy to Business upgrade only available from high buckets like B and Y; Business to First looks like free reign except some carriers may impose restrictions or surcharges from discounted Business, or continuing restrictions for upgrading to SQ's A380 F.

Overall I think it is more just an option rather than a lucrative deal. That said, it opens up a vector which you cannot deny may put some appreciable pressure on the inventory system.

I agree with you. It is already hard enough to get premium awards and one needs to book almost a year in advance.

Now if I was a Qantas FFer with status who uses their QFF points for upgrade requests then I would be extremely disappointed if I now had to compete with other Oneworld members for those hard to get points upgrades as well.

Especially for many flights a full AA award of QF, with AA miles, is not much more than waht is needed for an upgrade with QF points. To me 1 AA mile = 2 QF points

There isn't much discussion about Star upgrades because nobody uses them. It is cheaper to buy miles and book an award ticket than buy a Y or B class ticket and upgrade with points. Very few people will travel on a B or Y ticket at all.

I've not seen any announcements.
