Taking off and landing can be thrilling experiences. But we are such a well-travelled lot nowadays that arriving by plane can seem a bit of a walk in the park. To make you fall in love with air travel all over again – after all, the new Pan Am TV series has not quite made the cut for us – our flying friends over at at Cheapflights.co.uk unveil eight incredible runways that are guaranteed to take your breath away.

I've got 2 trips over to WLG in the next 7 days, looking forward to them both with great anticipation! Last week a colleague flew in and crabbed all the way down the runway after a nice sideways landing... Can't wait!

WLG is exciting on some days i believe, but I have flown into there quite a few times very uneventfully.QF used to fly 747SP's into there and NZ 762's, imagine those in a nasty storm on the 6300ft runway. Story is the SP's used to dump fuel just prior to landing - crikey, must have been before NZ went 'green'.

Suva Suva in Fiji is interesting...

Small regional airport and the cows graze on the run way...

The day we landed the baggage guy had the cows at the end of the run way.

Glad the cows didn't get spooked.

The airport office is 1 garden shed and the food vendor is another garden shed with a roof connecting the 2 sheds.

I'm surprised Wellington didn't make the cut.......

I saw a TV show some months ago on the same subject - it included a number of these airports!

There's also the one in Nepal - Lukla..

The TV show I saw also included this airport. Discussions with the pilots were quite interesting!

Suva Suva in Fiji is interesting...

Hamilton Island is not far off this ....

Terminal building is a 'shed' with no a/c, only ceiling fans. Despite being paved, the runway is (was) rough (you could feel joins every few metres) and the luggage is just driven into a corrugated iron covered annex to the terminal building and you collect it off the 'train' yourself!

I've flown in and out of Lukla...it's the only time I've ever prayed on a flight before, though if I knew then what I knew now I think i'd have been half tempted to take the long, rough and uncomfortable bus ride from KTM to Lukla

From personal experiences SNA, not so bad on landing but take offs are very short and steep due to noise restrictions.

This one's probably more unique than scary but I'd really love to go to Barra in Scotland, where the plane lands on the beach at low tide.
