2 of us traveling together tomorrow. Is the train link still priced exorbitantly? Wondering if it makes a cab or Uber (Black or X) the better option instead.

I've noticed lots of (smart) young backpackers just take the train to Mascot suburban and go for a stroll.

The train (although the surcharge is a ripoff) is not a bad deal from the middle to outer suburbs but a shocker to the city. From 30km out from the airport it costs me $19 one way on the train vs $120++ via taxi. Haven't caught a taxi in years. Used to Park 'n' Fly but that got too expensive plus arriving back into SYD at 1700 on a Friday was not how I liked to start my weekends!

But I'm a big fan of the train.

I've been caught out before; winding protest marches, sporting events, weekend roadworks.......in Sydney you just never know.

My rule of thumb:

1 pax --> Train
2+ pax --> Cab (unless it's peak hour / gridlock).

SAT AM not being peak hour --> Cab (ask them to go via O'Riordan Street and not via tollways).

I usually use either the 400 bus, or walk to Wolli Creek (from the international terminal) or Mascot (from the domestic terminal) station. The train fare from either of those stations is about $4 from memory into the city, as opposed to $17. Both walks take 15-20 minutes. Though I realise it may be slightly difficult if you have luggage.

Whilst the train is not the usual train fare, it's much cheaper than a cab, you don't get stuck in traffic and have to tolerate the rudeness of cab drivers. If use you an Opal card, it;s not quite the full $17 or $19 that people are quoting here and if you're lucky enough to have your 8 trips up in the week, it's even a little less.

Regarding the train, welcome to privatisation. At least a taxi or other car is door to door so you pay for that convenience.
